Adrian earns first round bye in NCAA Championship

INDIANAPOLIS – The Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) will be represented in the 2023 NCAA Division III Men's Hockey Championship by third-ranked Adrian College, as announced by the NCAA during its selection show.

The Bulldogs won the NCHA's Harris Cup title on Saturday with a dominating 8-1 victory and as a result, received the league's automatic bid to advance. Adrian is one of 12 teams in the tournament and one of just four teams to receive a first-round bye. They will face the winner of Augsburg and UW-Stevens Point on Saturday, March 18 at Arrington Ice Arena. A game time will be announced at a later date.

Adrian is 23-4-2 overall and was 13-4-1 during NCHA conference play, and was the top seed. It is currently riding a four-game winning streak and has won 10 of its last 11 games. The Bulldogs currently boast the nation's top-ranked offense (5.76 goals per game) and power-play unit (.428 percent).

They are led by senior forward Matus Spodniak, who is also the NCHA Player of the Year, with his national-leading 1.86 points per game average and 0.97 goals per game. Ty Enns and Alessio Luciani add to the firepower with their 1.57 and 1.52 points per game average, respectively.

Augsburg (16-9-2) won the MIAC Tournament and is making its eighth trip to the NCAA Championship. The Auggies finished second in the MIAC regular season standings before winning the MIAC title for the sixth time in school history.

UW-Stevens Point (19-5-4) won both the WIAC regular season and tournament titles this season. The Pointers are making their 16th NCAA Championship appearance and have won six national titles in program history.

The Auggies and Pointers will play March 11 at 7 pm at K.B. Willett Arena in Stevens Point, Wis.
