Marian’s Thorogood and MSOE’s Boynton
Earn NCHA Men’s Hockey Weekly Honors

Marian University senior Derek Thorogood (F - Calgary, Alta.) is the NCHA Men’s Offensive Player of the Week and MSOE freshman Rock Boynton (G - Lomita, Calif.) is the NCHA Men’s Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.

Thorogood is the first student-athlete to repeat as NCHA Offensive Player of the Week this season after playing a role in each and every goal his team scored on an unbeaten 1-0-1 weekend. In the opener against Saint John’s, he scored the opening goal and the game-tying goal in the third period, adding the assist on the second MU goal of the 3-3 draw. Then against Bethel, he scored on the power play to open the scoring, which proved to be the game-winner, and later assisted the second Marian goal. In all he tallied 3 goals and 2 assists.

Boynton is the NCHA Defensive Player of the Week after a huge weekend between the pipes for the Raiders. The second MSOE player to win the defensive honor this season, Boynton put together a 1-0-1 weekend, making a combined 74 saves on 77 total shots for a .961 save percentage at the UW-Stevens Point Holiday Tournament. Boynton made 42 saves in a 2-2 draw with #8/10 UWSP, including 4 in OT and 19 in the second period alone. He then followed that up with 32 more saves in a 3-1 win over Stout, holding the two opponents to an 0-for-9 showing on the power play.

2017-18 NCHA WEEKLY TOP PERFORMERS

T.J. Black, St. Norbert
Black made 35 saves in 2-2 tie vs. Manhattanville on Friday, and then added 21 saves in 2-1 overtime win over Manhattanville on Saturday.

Josh Boyko, Aurora
Boyko helped Aurora to its first win of the season with a shutout of Stout, making 19 saves. He went 1-1 on the week with 49 saves.

Austin Frank, Lawrence
Frank picked up an assist on Lawrence’s first goal against Middlebury and then got another assist on the goal that helped seal the victory with 2:55 left. Frank was one of two Lawrence players named to the all-tournament team at the PrimeLink Great Northern ShootOut.

Dante Hahn, Concordia
Hahn tallied three goals in a 1-0-1 weekend for the Falcons. The sophomore forward netted two scores in a 5-0 win over Bethel Friday, while adding the Falcons second score in a 2-2 tie with Saint John’s Saturday.

Dillon Kelley, Adrian
Kelly had a .944 save percentage in a 3-1 non-conference win over Trine University. Lost his shutout bid in the second period when the Thunder’s lone goal deflected off the skate of a Bulldog in front of the net after a centering pass from the right wing. Kelley hasn’t lost a game since his sophomore year--a string of eight wins.

Josh Koepplinger, Lawrence
Koepplinger played a part in Lawrence’s final three goals in a 6-3 win over Middlebury in the semifinals of the PrimeLink Great Northern ShootOut. Koepplinger assisted on the game-winning goal and then scored a few minutes later to put the Vikings up by two. He then assisted on the final goal to seal the victory.

Chase Matson, Adrian
In his season debut, Matson scored what proved to be the game-winning goal, shorthanded, as Adrian defeated Trine 3-1 in a non-conference game. The Bulldogs were ahead 1-0 at the time and in the middle of killing off a Thunder power play when Taylor McCloy got the takeaway in Trine’s zone and fired a shot before Matson found the back of the net on a rebound.

Nick Redmon, MSOE
Tallied a game-winning goal and an assist at the UW-Stevens Point Holiday Tournament and was +2 for the weekend. He assisted on the opening goal against #8/10 UWSP and then scored the game-winner against UW-Stout.

Jack Romanuik, Concordia
Romanuik posted his second shutout in as many starts by making 22 saves in a 5-0 win over Bethel. The junior has yet to allow a goal in two-plus games this season, shutting out both Bethel and Finlandia.

Hunter Vorva, Marian
Vorva had another strong weekend in goal for the Sabres as he led Marian to a tie against Saint John’s (Minn.) and win over Bethel. Vorva posted his second shutout of the season in the victory over Bethel and made 19 saves in both games. The Kalamazoo, Mich. native closed out the weekend with a 1.44 goals against average and a .927 save percentage.
