St. Scholastica to Join
Women's Division in 2010-11
Saint Paul, Minn. (April 23, 2009) – The Chief
Executive Officers of the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association
member institutions have reviewed the College of St.
Scholastica’s application for admission to the Women’s
Division and have voted unanimously to admit the Duluth, Minnesota
school. The Saints will begin conference play in the 2010-11
season.
St. Scholastica’s women’s program will be part
of the fourth expansion year in NCHA Women’s history.
It is the fourth program granted admission to the league since last
December; the addition of the Saints will make an eleven-team
Women’s Division for the 2010-11 season.
Marian University (Fond du Lac, Wis.), Adrian College (Adrian,
Mich.) and St. Norbert College (De Pere, Wis.) were all granted
admission to the Women’s Division since last December.
Marian and Adrian will begin play this fall while St. Norbert will
join in 2010-11 with St. Scholastica.
“We are most happy to welcome the College of St. Scholastica
to our Women’s Division as we continue the growth of
women’s hockey in our conference,” said NCHA
Commissioner Bill Kronschnabel.
The NCHA has automatic qualification status for the NCAA Division
III tournament, which UW-River Falls earned by winning the
O’Brien Cup playoffs this past season.
Previous expansions included Finlandia in 2003 and
Concordia-Wisconsin in 2007. The original members of the
Women’s Division, opening play in 2000, were Lake Forest,
UW-Eau Claire, UW-River Falls, UW-Stevens Point and
UW-Superior.
St. Scholastica will practice and play home games at Mars Lakeview
Arena in Duluth, which is also used by the Men’s
program. The Men’s program has been in the NCHA
consecutively since 1994, with previous membership from 1983 to
1991.

play. Falcon goalie Cassi Campbell (Anchorage, AK) finished
the game with 22 saves, including 12 in the second period. It
was the first game all year UWRF had been shutout.
On Saturday the Falcons got back to their lamp-lighting ways in
the third-place game as Abby Sunderman (LeSueur, Minn.) opened the
scoring against Middlebury at 10:33 of the first on a power
play. Heather Horgan (Grand Rapids, Minn.) gave UWRF a 2-1
lead after two as she scored at 8:01, but the Panthers scored the
equalizer at 6:03 of the third. The 2-2 score lasted through
regulation time, only until Middlebury buried the game winner at
4:48 of overtime.
UW-Stout Bounced in OT by

Saint Paul, Minn. (March 20, 2009) –
UW-Stout came up short of a trip to the NCAA Division III
championship game last Friday, falling 3-2 to Gustavus Adolphus in
the Frozen Four semifinals. Patrick Dynan scored for the
Gusties at 6:31 of overtime.
Blue Devil goalie Matt Koenig made 35 saves, including 14 in the
third period, before surrendering the season-ending tally. It

and take a 2-1 lead into the final period.

momentum. The assists went to Nick Klaren and Derek
Hanson.

session. UW-Stout recorded four shots in the extra frame.
The game featured 15 power plays between the teams, with Gustavus

Saint Paul, Minn. (March 19, 2009) –

Koenig. The senor turned away 33 of 34 shots and the Blue
Devils gained a 2-1 victory over St. Scholastica. Andy
Sternberg opened the scoring at 11:32 of the first on the power

Wis.

to shutout UW-Superior as he led the Gusties to a 2-0 victory in
Superior, Wis. Ross Ring-Jarvi broke a scoreless tie late in
the second period and David Martinson scored an empty net goal in

UW-Stout wins first-ever
Peters Cup Title
UW-Superior, St. Scholastica also awarded bids to NCAA
Tournament
Saint Paul, Minn. (March 11, 2009) –
They were on the road, in a packed Wessman Arena, playing a team
that hadn’t lost at home all season long. And somehow
UW-Stout scored four unanswered goals and then hung on for a 4-3
Peters Cup Championship victory last Saturday night over
UW-Superior.
The NCHA playoff title is the first in school history for the Blue
Devils, who earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA
Tournament. With that bid UW-Stout will play familiar foe St.
Scholastica, which received an at-large bid, on Saturday, March 14
in Menomonie. UW-Superior, the NCHA regular season champion,
also received an at-large bid and will host Gustavus Adolphus on
Saturday.
At the end of a tight first period, UW-Stout’s Bobby Kuehl
scored a crucial goal that may have been the difference in the
game. Kuehl beat Yellowjacket goaltender Chad Beiswenger just
before time expired, with 0:00 on the clock as the team celebrated
a 2-1 lead.
In the second Derek Hanson made it 3-1 at 5:35 and then David
Larson scored during a delayed penalty at 11:13, firing the puck
between Beiswenger’s legs.
UW-Superior poured shots on the UW-Stout goal in the third, but
Matt Koenig turned away enough of them to hold on for the
win. Koenig, who was solid all night long, made 14 saves in
the final period and finished with 34 saves on 37 shots.
The Yellowjackets got goals from Chris Wilson and Logan Isley in
the third, cutting their deficit to 4-3. But despite great
scoring chances in the final minutes, they couldn’t get the
equalizer.

Marian Hires Cowan as First
Head Coach
Saint Paul, Minn. (March 10, 2009) –
Marian University, which was admitted to the Northern Collegiate
Hockey Association women’s division last December, has
announced the hiring of Mike Cowan as the first head coach of the
Sabres.
Cowan comes to Marian after eight years coaching Wisconsin
girls’ hockey power Fond du Lac / Waupun, where he lead the
team to state titles in 2004 and 2006. He compiled a career
record of 136-41-6 at the school. His previous head coaching
stops include the Lawrence University men’s program from
1991-95, St. Mary’s Springs High School boys and Waupun High
School boys. He was also an assistant at Blaine High School
in Minnesota.
“I’m very excited to be the first head coach of the
women’s hockey program,” Cowan said.
“Marian has a first-rate academic program and I believe this
will help attract prospective student-athletes.”
Cowan’s playing career was highlighted by his time at the
University of Wisconsin where he was coached by the legendary Bob
Johnson. A decorated player and coach, Cowan is a member of
the University of Wisconsin Hockey Hall of Fame as well as the
Wisconsin State Hockey Hall of Fame.
“The most important part of building a new program is
identifying the leader of that program,” said Marin Athletic
Director Doug Hammonds. “It is an honor to have a person like
Mike Cowan, with all his experience, connections in the sport of
hockey and proven success, to establish our foundation in the sport
of women’s hockey.”
The Sabres will start practicing in just eight months and will
open NCHA play in November.

Women's All-Academic team
Grossmann named Player of the Year, Women's All-NCHA team
announced
Saint Paul, Minn. (February 26, 2009)
– UW-Stevens Point senior forward Nicole Grossmann
(Lindstrom, Minn. / Chisago Lakes), having been named to the
All-NCHA team her previous three seasons, added a fourth All-NCHA
selection today, plus something she hadn’t yet won:
Women’s Player of the Year.
The coaches voted Grossmann the league’s top player for many
reasons, including her 16 goals and 28 points on the season.
Her 16 goals ranked second in the NCHA while her 28 points were
good for a co-conference scoring title with All NCHA teammate
Jessica Thompson (Shoreview, Minn. / Mounds View) of UW-River
Falls. Grossmann buried four power play goals this season and
recorded one hat trick on November 25th against visiting
Augsburg.
Grossmann is from Lindstrom, Minnesota, about 35 miles north of
St. Paul. She played previously at Chisago Lakes High School
in the Minnesota State High School League, lettering six times and
qualifying for the state tournament in 2004.
The coaches also voted for Coach of the Year, selecting
UW-River Falls’ Joe Cranston (left) as the 2009
winner. Cranston led the Falcons to the NCHA regular
season title with a 17-5-3 overall record and a #7 national ranking
through February 24th. This is the second Coach of the Year award
for Cranston, whom previously won the award in 2007.
Other highlights from the 2009 All-NCHA team include a fourth
selection for UW-Superior goalie Rikki Nespor. She posted a
1.69 goals against average in 780 minutes this year. Dana
Carothers of UW-Stevens Point was voted to her second All NCHA team
in as many years. Carothers lit the lamp 16 times, including
seven times on the power play. Jodi Holland of UW-Superior
earned her first selection thanks in part to leading the NCHA in
goals with 19, and Concordia-Wisconsin defenseman Bradi Jonasson
became the first ever Falcon to be voted onto the team.
Jonasson and UW-River Falls defenseman Amanda Ryder were the only
freshmen selected.
2009 Player of the Year: Nicole Grossmann, UW-Stevens Point

Beiswenger voted player of the year, Men's All-NCHA team
announced
Saint Paul, Minn.
(February 19, 2009) – The votes are in and the
Northern Collegiate Hockey Association coaches have voted
UW-Superior senior goaltender Chad Beiswenger player of the
year. Beiswenger was the only goalie to play this year for
the Yellowjackets, logging 1518:49 of ice time (first in the nation
by nearly two full games) and posting a sparkling 20-2-3
record. Three shutouts, seven 1-goal games and a .920 save
percentage contributed to a 2.05 goals against average.
“(Beiswenger) is the biggest reason we’re the number
one seed in the postseason,” said UWS had coach Dan
Stauber. “Most nights we get a performance reflective
of an All-American. He’s only had one truly off night
all year.”
Beiswenger was named to the honorable mention team last
season. He grew up in northwest Minnesota in Moorhead, near
the North Dakota border. Beiswenger played junior hockey for
Helena of the North American Hockey League.
NCHA coaches also voted for coach of the year, selecting
Mark Wick of St. Scholastica (left). Wick, a
native of Hermantown, Minnesota, led the Saints to an 18-5-2
overall record through February 18th and finished the regular
season ranked fourth nationally. Wick is in his fifth season
behind the bench for St. Scholastica.
Other highlights from the 2009 All-NCHA team include a rare 4-time
selection in UW-River Falls senior forward Derek Hansberry.
Hansberry proved himself once again as a talented goal scorer,
bagging seven power play goals and totaling 16 on the season.
Conference champion UW-Superior led the way with three players
named to the team: Forward Braden Desmet, defenseman Ryan Kuntz and
Beiswenger. Two defensemen earned their third All-NCHA
selection: UW-Eau Claire’s Greg Petersen and UW-Stout’s
Jack Wolgemuth. UW-Eau Claire forward Sean Garrity was named
to his second All-NCHA team, having been a 2007 pick.
2009 Men's Player of the Year: Chad Beiswenger,

08 All-NCHA year
* 2007 Honorable Mention
# 2008 Honorable Mention
St. Norbert College women
accepted into NCHA, will begin play in 2010-11
Saint Paul, Minn. (February 17, 2009) –
Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Commissioner Bill
Kronschnabel announced today St. Norbert College’s
application for membership in the women’s division has been
reviewed and approved by the member institution Chief Executive
Officers. The Green Knights open play in the fall of
2010.
“We are pleased to see St. Norbert College participate in
the growth of women’s hockey,” Kronschnabel said.
“With St. Norbert’s strong hockey tradition, we
anticipate its women’s team will be a formidable addition to
the NCHA.”
St. Norbert is the third institution to make NCHA women’s
expansion news this year, joining 2009-10 entrants Marian
University and Adrian College. Marian and Adrian will mark
the third season of expansion; St. Norbert will mark the
fourth. The original five member schools in 2000 were Lake
Forest College, UW-Eau Claire, UW-River Falls, UW-Stevens Point and
UW-Superior. Finlandia University joined in 2003 and
Concordia University Wisconsin joined in 2007. The
women’s playoff champion receives an automatic bid to the
NCAA Division III tournament.
“With our geographic location, the growth and interest in
the women's game, and the success of our men's program, women's
hockey is a natural fit for St. Norbert College and adds to our
outstanding offering of sport opportunities for
student-athletes,” St. Norbert Athletics Director Tim Bald
said.
St. Norbert is located just outside of Green Bay, Wisconsin in De
Pere, roughly 115 miles north of Milwaukee. The Green Knight
men’s program has played in the NCHA since 1994-95, winning a
national championship in 2008. The women’s team will
practice and play at the Resch Olympic Pavilion in the Cornerstone
Community Center, adjacent to the men’s home rink. The
Community Center opened in 2000, with the Pavilion opening in
2008.

Grossmann grabs player of the week award
Saint Paul, Minn. (February 17, 2009)
– Senior forward Nicole Grossmann (Lindstrom, Minn.
/ Chisago Lakes) of UW-Stevens Point has been named player of the
week in the NCHA women’s division, the league office
announced today. Grossmann notched three points in a weekend

On Friday night Grossmann scored a pair of goals that gave the
Pointers some breathing room against the Foresters. Grossmann
scored at 18:04 to make it 2-0 heading into the dressing
room. In the second it was Grossmann all alone at 13:23,
giving UW-Stevens Point a 3-goal lead they would ride to the end of
regulation.
On Saturday the Pointers trailed for most of the game until
Grossmann helped rescue a victory late in the third. She was

the net, which teammate Rachael Graves (Bemidji, Minn. / Bemidji)
cleaned up for the game-winner.

Saint Paul, Minn. (February 10, 2009) –

today. Nordness scored three goals for the hat trick last
weekend against visiting Concordia Wisconsin.

Adrian College joins NCHA
women's conference
Saint Paul, Minn. (February 2, 2008)
– Northern Collegiate Hockey Association
Commissioner Bill Kronschnabel announced today that Adrian
College’s application for membership in the NCHA
women’s division has been approved by the Chief Executive
Officers of the NCHA-member institutions. Adrian’s
women’s team will start play in the league this fall as part
of the 2009-10 season.
Kronschnabel stated, “We are very pleased to welcome Adrian
College's women's hockey program into the NCHA. The
previous two-year scheduling commitment gave both Adrian and the
NCHA the time to address the logistical challenges presented by
Adrian's location in southeastern Michigan. The NCHA is proud
to support the continued growth of women's ice hockey, and we look
forward to Adrian's participation as a full member of our
conference.”
Adrian will join Marian University as part of the third expansion
in the history of the women’s conference, making a nine-team
conference for 2009-10. Finlandia University joined in 2003
and Concordia University Wisconsin was admitted in 2007. The
original five member schools, which started play in the 2000-01
season, were Lake Forest College, UW-Eau Claire, UW-River Falls,
UW-Stevens Point and UW-Superior. The winner of the NCHA
women’s conference playoffs receives an automatic bid to the
NCAA Division III tournament.
“It feels very good to be associated with a quality
conference and all the benefits that come with it,” said
Adrian Athletic Director Mike Duffy. “The competition
in the NCHA is some of the best in Division III and this move means
great things for our women’s hockey program.”
Adrian College is located in Adrian, Michigan, about 70 miles
southwest of Detroit and 100 miles southeast of Kalamazoo.
The team is currently in the second year of a scheduling agreement
with the NCHA and is ranked tenth in the latest U.S. College Hockey
Online national poll. The Adrian men’s team will

Northern Collegiate Hockey Association Commissioner Bill
Kronschnabel announced today that Marian University's application
for membership in the NCHA for its forthcoming women's hockey

University is instituting a women's varsity hockeyprogram. We

The addition of Marian marks the third time the women’s
division has expanded and creates an eight-team conference for
2009-2010. Finlandia University joined in 2003 and Concordia
University Wisconsin was admitted in 2007. The original five

Forest College, UW-Eau Claire, UW-River Falls, UW-Stevens Point and
UW-Superior.
“Marian University is honored to be a member of the NCHA in
women’s ice hockey,” said Marian Athletic Director Doug
Hammond. “This will provide our student-athletes
competition in one of the more prestigious hockey conferences in
the nation.”
Marian University is located in east-central Wisconsin in Fond du
Lac, roughly 75 miles south of Green Bay and 65 miles north of
Milwaukee. The women’s program will practice and play
home games at the Blue Line Family Ice Center in Fond du Lac, where
their men’s program currently plays. The men’s
program will continue to play in the Midwest Collegiate Hockey
Association. Women’s hockey will be the 15th sport

St. Paul, Minn. (October 20, 2008) - The head coaches in
the NCHA Women’s Division have voted UW- Superior the
preseason favorite to win the conference in 2008-09. UWS, which won
the O’Brien Cup (playoff champion) and advanced to the
Division III Frozen Four last year, narrowly earned more points in
the poll than UW-Stevens Point. The Yellowjackets lose 07-08 player
of the year Gina Baranzelli (Virginia, MN), but they return two
all-conference goaltenders - Melissa Kunzleman (Brandon, Manitoba)

LeGree (Sioux City, IA), who notched 30 points in 30 games last
season.

Coaches
vote St. Norbert favorite to win Men's Division in
2008-09
St. Paul, Minn. (October 20, 2008) – Despite losing two key
players off its national championship roster – G Kyle Jones
and F Marc Belanger – coaches voted St. Norbert the clear
preseason favorite to win the NCHA Men’s Division in 2008-09.
And for good reason: Besides Jones and Belanger, everyone is
back
for the Green Knights.
SNC has won the NCHA ten of the last 12 years and will try to do
so again this season with six players who notched 20 or more points
last year. Leading the scoring brigade could be Matt Boyd (St.
Albert, Alberta), who went off for 39 points in 07-08. The hanging
question will be how the Green Knights will replace Jones in net.
One candidate will be Blake Bashor (Le Claire, IA), who posted a
6-0-1 record in seven starts last season.
Coaches agree 08-09 will feature parity, and that was evident in
the votes beyond SNC. UW-River Falls, UW- Stout and UW-Superior
packed the two-three-four spots, respectively. UW-Stevens Point
finished 5th, with St. Scholastica, the only other team receiving a
first-place vote, in the six slot. UW-Eau Claire and Lake Forest
were voted to finish 7th and 8th.
The Men’s Division opens play next Thursday night when
UW-Superior hosts Northland at Wessman Arena.

Monahan named sports information director
St. Paul, Minn.
(September 9, 2008) - Brian Monahan has been named sports
information director for the Northern Collegiate Hockey
Association, Commissioner Bill Kronschnabel announced today.
Monahan is a 2002 graduate of Lake Forest College, where he worked
for four years in the sports information and athletic office. He
participated in hockey under coach Tony Fritz before becoming the
public address announcer and radio play-by-play voice.
The hiring marks a return of sorts to the NCHA, as Monahan’s
first job after college was covering the league for American
College Hockey Magazine.
“I’m extremely excited to work in this position for
the NCHA,” he said. “The league has always been
fascinating to me, and the quality of hockey, top to bottom for
both the men and women, is exceptional.”
Monahan has a hockey officiating background in addition to
journalism, working games for the Minnesota State High School
League and the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
He resides in St. Paul with his wife, Katy, and works as a field
producer for ESPN on Monday Night Football. |
