No. 9-ranked Augsburg scores OT win over No. 3 St. Norbert

MINNEAPOLIS -- Alex Rodriguez (SR, Miami, Fla./Shattuck-St. Mary's (Minn.) HS) scored two unassisted goals, including the game-winner 1:29 into overtime, as his Augsburg University men's hockey team scored a 6-5 victory over defending NCAA Division III national champion and current No. 3-ranked St. Norbert College (Wis.) on Friday at Ed Saugestad Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Rodriguez scored the first and last goals of the game for the Auggies, both unassisted markers, at the 4:06 mark of the first period and the 1:29 mark of overtime. Rodriguez now has 12 goals on the season, a total that leads all Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players and is tied for second-most among all NCAA Division III players nationally. His 1.20 goals per-game average is tops nationally. Rodriguez added an assist for a three-point night.
• Trailing 2-1 in the first period, Augsburg scored four straight goals, including three in the second period, to take a 5-2 advantage. Tommy Carey (SO, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS), Austin Martinsen (SO, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS), Patrick O'Connor (FY, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) and Eric Brenk (SR, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) all scored for the Auggies, with O'Connor notching his first collegiate goal.
• But the Green Knights, the No. 3-ranked team in the latest USCHO.com and D3hockey.com Division III national polls, tied the game with three straight goals of their own, including a power-play marker and shorthanded goal.
• Augsburg, ranked No. 9 nationally by USCHO.com and No. 10 by D3hockey.com, were outshot by a 43-32 margin by the visiting Green Knights, the most shots allowed by the Auggies in a game so far this season. Nick Schmit (SR, Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) had 38 saves in goal to pick up the win, improving to 5-0-1 on the season.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg snapped an eight-game losing streak to St. Norbert, including losses in each of the last three NCAA Division III national playoff quarterfinal games between the two teams. Augsburg's last win in the series was a 7-4 win on Nov. 5, 2005 in Minneapolis. The Auggies now lead the all-time series 11-10-1 with the Green Knights.
• Augsburg has now outscored its opponents by a 41-23 margin, with both totals second-best among MIAC teams.

FOR THE FOES
• Dominick Sacco scored a goal with two assists to lead St. Norbert. He tied the game at 5-5 with an unassisted, shorthanded goal at the 11:27 mark of the third period.
• Tyler Andrews, Brad Pung, Logan Froberg and Timmy Nicksic also scored for the Green Knights, and Brendon Gysbers had two assists.
• T.J. Black had 26 saves in goal for St. Norbert.
