Royals Drop Heartbreaker in Overtime, 3-2

BLAINE, Minn. – It took overtime to decide a winner as the Bethel University men's hockey team dropped a heartbreaking non-conference game to the Milwaukee School of Engineering, 3-2.

The goal scored by the visiting Raiders 47 seconds into the overtime drops the Royals to 1-11-1 overall as they head into a month long break. Bethel returns to action in the new calendar year on January 4 to take on Saint John's in a MIAC home and home series that will close out at Bethel University Arean on January 5.

Contrary to the first 40 minutes of play, the two teams skated to a scoreless third with both teams having a power play opportunity.

A short-handed goal by MSOE 5:45 into the second period but the Raiders up 2-0. The Royals were able to tie things up at 2-2 after spending 10 minutes on the power play. Curtis Hansen started out the Bethel scoring before Michael Piehler put in the Royals third power play goal in the last three games with just over five minutes remaining before the second intermission.

The Raiders started the scoring with a goal on their second power play opportunity. Jeff Makowski slid one past Royals goalie Joe Sheppard with a 1:04 remaining in the opening period. The Royals had a pair of power player opportunities but were unsuccessful on the two shots they had.

Bethel finished the night 1-for-6 on the power player with seven shots while MSOE went 1-for-5 with eight shots. The Raiders outshot the Royals in the contest by a 37-21 margin.
