ADRIAN, Mich. — For 40 minutes, the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team held the upper hand on third-ranked Adrian, holding leads of 1-0 and 2-1 — thanks to late goals in each of the first two periods.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, the game consists of three, 20-minute periods — and the Bulldogs dominated the game's final 20 minutes Sunday.
Adrian scored three times in the third period in rallying for a 4-2 nonconference win over the upset-minded Cardinals at Arrington Ice Arena.
Saint Mary's used the better-late-than-never approach through the first two periods, getting a goal from
Kayla Henning (Burnsville, Minn.) with just 5:15 left in the opening stanza to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead, and added a goal by
Natalie Ryan (Village of Lakewood, Ill.) with 2:21 remaining in the second period, as SMU took a 2-1 lead heading into the third period.
And what a third period it turned out to be — for the Bulldogs.
Ume Bjelland pulled Adrian even, 2-2 with a goal at 8:09 of the third, and Abbie Grias gave the Bulldogs their first lead of the game, 3-2, eight minutes later. Sydney Daversa rounded out the scoring — and sealed the Adrian win — tallying an empty net goal with 12 seconds remaining.
Jordan Keeley (St. Peter, Minn.) had a career day in goal for the Cardinals, stopping 43 Adrian shots — 12 more than her previous career high — while Adrian's Mia Glassco recorded 15 saves.
The Cardinals (0-2-0 overall) are back on the road on Saturday, heading to W.H. Hunt Arena in River Falls, Wis., for a 2:05 p.m. nonconference showdown against UW-River Falls. After three straight home games over the weekend, the Bulldogs (3-0-0 overall) hit the road on Nov. 15-16, heading to Mequon, Wis., for a pair of games against Marian.
