Augsburg rallies for tie with defending national champs

MINNEAPOLIS -- Luke Dietsch (SR, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) scored two goals, including a power-play marker with 7:54 remaining in regulation time on Saturday, as the No. 9-ranked Augsburg University men's hockey team rallied for a 3-3, overtime tie with No. 3-ranked St. Norbert College (Wis.) in a nonconference contest at Ed Saugestad Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• For the second straight game, two of the top teams in the West Region went to overtime, and the battle again lived up to expectations. Augsburg outshot St. Norbert by a 41-38 margin, but the Green Knights held a 5-3 advantage in overtime. 
• Dietsch scored the first and last goals of the game for the Auggies, opening with a goal from Eric Brenk (SR, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) and Patrick O'Connor (FY, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) 8:54 into play. He tied the game with a power-play goal from O'Connor and Jake Larson (SR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) at the 12:06 mark of the third period.
• Larson gave the Auggies a 2-1 lead with an unassisted, shorthanded goal at the 18:37 mark of the first period, but St. Norbert took the lead back 29 seconds later on a power-play goal, then another power-play goal six minutes into the second period gave the Green Knights the lead.
• Nick Schmit (SR, Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) had 35 saves in goal for Augsburg, moving to 5-0-2 on the year. His 1.89 goals against-average and .938 save percentage are both second-best among all Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference goalies and is tied for second-most among all NCAA Division III players nationally. His 1.20 goals per-game average is tops nationally.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• Augsburg, ranked No. 9 nationally by USCHO.com and No. 10 by D3hockey.com, claimed a win and a tie against defending NCAA Division III national champion St. Norbert, ranked No. 3 in both polls this week. The Auggies now lead the all-time series 11-10-2 with the Green Knights.
• Augsburg has now outscored its opponents by a 41-23 margin, with both totals second-best among MIAC teams.

FOR THE FOES
• Riley Christensen, Roman Uchyn and Peter Bates scored goals for St. Norbert, with Luke Davison recording two assists.
• Ryan Bontorin had 38 saves in goal for the Green Knights.
