The Forester men's hockey team led for more than 42 minutes Friday night before falling 7-6 in overtime to St. Norbert College, the eighth-ranked team in the nation.
Junior forward David Cohen matched his career-high with three points on the night, the first when he set up freshman forward Noah Furman's power play goal that started the scoring at 9:10 in the opening period. It was Furman's fourth goal of the season.
Cohen matched Furman with his fourth goal of the year at the 11:25 mark with junior forward Ryan Kropp picking up the assist.
St. Norbert finally got on the scoreboard with exactly 4:00 on the clock and the Foresters led 2-1 after a period of play.
After both teams put 13 shots on goal in the first frame, the Green Knights had a 16-5 advantage in that category in the second.
Lake Forest added to its lead just 30 seconds into the period on a power play goal by freshman defenseman Matteas Derraugh. It was his third score this year.
After St. Norbert scored twice to tie the score, the home team regained the lead at the 12:25 mark on freshman defenseman Hardy Wagner's first career goal. Furman assisted on the score and the Foresters took a one-goal lead into the locker room again after the second.
Cohen assisted freshman forward Jared Gerger at the 6:15 mark of the third period and Kropp lit the lamp just 44 seconds later with assists credited junior defenseman Vaughan Bamford and senior forward Kyle Cote.
The 6-3 lead was not enough, however, as Green Knight tallies at 7:36, 13:57, and 16:32 drew the visitors even once again and the game-winner came 87 seconds into overtime. The visitors had a 20-5 edge in shots in the third period and a 50-23 advantage on the night.
Both teams earned a point in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Association standings when the game went to overtime and St. Norbert received another for posting the victory. Lake Forest is now 6-9-1 overall on the season and 4-4-1 in conference play. The Green Knights won their 12th consecutive game and improved to 13-3-0 overall and 9-0-0 in the league.
The Foresters will host St. Norbert again Monday at 5:00 p.m.
