Auggies open campaign with loss to Saints

MINNEAPOLIS -- Rallying from an early deficit with three straight goals, the College of St. Scholastica spoiled the Augsburg University women's hockey team's season-opener on Friday night, claiming a 3-1 nonconference victory at Ed Saugestad Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Nikki Nightengale (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson HS) scored the lone goal of the game for the Auggies, opening the scoring at the 12:37 mark of the first period with a power-play goal from Bridget Wagner (JR, Niles, Ill./Maine South HS) and Mackenzie Molnar (JR, Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS).
• Augsburg outshot St. Scholastica by a 33-13 margin in the game, but St. Scholastica goalie Lexi Thomeczek stopped the last 25 shots on-goal she faced after surrendering the early Auggie goal.
• McKenna Manalli (SR, Byron, Ill./Byron HS) had 10 saves in goal for the Auggies.
• Nightengale and Molnar had five shots on-goal each, while Kalli Prekker (SO, Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove HS) and Emily Ach (JR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) had four shots each.

FOR THE FOES
• Thomeczek had 32 saves to claim the victory in goal.
• Giorgia Battisti tied the game at 1-1 with a goal from Rachel Anderson at the 8:00 mark of the second period.
• The Saints scored twice in the third period. Amber Tilander scored from Greta Nundahl at the 3:39 mark, and Anderson scored an unassisted goal at the 10:25 mark.
