Scoreboard Fails to Reflect Effort in SJU's Loss at No. 15 St. Scholastica

DULUTH, Minn. – No. 15 St. Scholastica extended its unbeaten streak to nine games with a 4-1 win over Saint John's on Saturday, Dec. 8, at Mars Lakeview Arena in Duluth.

The Johnnies (5-5-3, 3-2-1 MIAC) out-worked the nationally ranked Saints (8-1-1, 4-1-1 NCHA), out-shooting the home team by a 2-to-1 margin (58-29), including a 31-17 advantage on net. SJU hit the pipe four times and was 0-for-4 on the power play.

Nolan Ross gave CSS a 1-0 lead on a wrister high between the faceoff circles 10:46 into the game. Cole Golka made it 2-0 6:53 into the second period and Kyle Star increased the lead to three 54 seconds later on the power play. The Saints scored the three goals on 12 shot attempts (seven on net). 

Senior defenseman Sean Lang (Apple Valley, Minn.) cut SJU's deficit to 3-1 with his 20th career goal, during a 4-on-4, with 2:59 left in the second period. Junior forwards Brady Heppner (Crookston, Minn.) and Kyle Wagner (St. Francis, Minn.) recorded the assists, which extended both of their point streaks to four games. The Johnnies posted a 14-5 advantage on net and hit the pipe three times in the second period alone.

Golka ended the scoring with an empty-netter at the 18:30 mark of the third period.

Sophomore goaltender Mac Berglove (Elk River, Minn.) made 13 saves in the loss.

The Johnnies return to conference play in the New Year against Bethel at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 4, at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
