Women’s Hockey Takes Game One over Falcons

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team scored three third period goals to pull away and take game one of its Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA) Slaats Cup quarterfinal against Concordia University Wisconsin by a score of 5-1 at Mars Lakeview Arena on Friday evening.
 
The Scoring
The Saints had their first power play opportunity of the night 7:54 into the first period and were able to score their first goal with six seconds left on the power play. Tessa Lowry (Calgary, Alberta/Edge School) assisted Paige Forsman (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS) to make it 1-0 to CSS. The Saints added a second goal with 2:35 left in the period after Courtney Bloemke (Nicollet, Minn./Mankato West HS) and Greta Nundahl (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) set up Kayla Kasel (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS). Shots on goal at the end of the period finished 10-7 in favor of CUW.
 
The Saints outshot the Falcons 11-7 in the second period, but it was the Falcons who found the back of the net with 8:40 left in the period to make it 2-1 after two periods.
 
The third period would see three goals, all of which came from CSS. The first came shorthanded just 2:23 into the period when Courtney Bloemke (Nicollet, Minn./Mankato West HS) scored off a Mariah Haedrich (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) rebound. The second came with 9:12 left, Rachel Anderson (Shoreview, Minn./Mounds View HS) and Alexia Klaas (Duluth, Minn./Duluth Denfeld HS (Minnesota-Duluth)) assisted Greta Nundahl (New Brighton, Minn./Irondale HS) to make it 4-1 to CSS. The Saints' third of the period came on the power play with 2:35 left in the game, Kasel got her second of the night thanks to assists by Klaas and Anderson.
 
Top Performers for CSS
Kasel led in goals with two, Klaas and Anderson each had two assists. Lexi Thomeczek (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph Academy (St. Louis AAA Blues)) saved 20 of the 21 shots she faced in net for her 13th win of the season.
 
Top Performers for CUW
Jossa Danis scored the lone goal for the Falcons, Emily Godwin and Issy Bilton were credited with the assist. Christina Pattengale stopped 23 of the 28 shots she faced in goal.
 
Up Next
The Saints (19-6-1) and the Falcons (12-11-3) meet tomorrow at Mars Lakeview Arena for the second game of the quarterfinal at 4 p.m. The Saints just need a tie to advance. If Concordia wins, a 20-minute mini-game will follow to determine a series winner.
