Hockey Teams to Hold a “Stick It to Cancer” Event Friday

DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – Friday night at Mars Lakeview Arena will be special night as both the St. Scholastica women's and men's hockey teams will come together to support one of their own in a "Stick It to Cancer" Benefit.

Just about every person has been affected by cancer in some way. For St. Scholastica sophomore Paige Forsman (Cokato, Minn./Dassel-Cokato HS), she has been affected directly over the past year.

Last spring, Paige's mom, Sue, was diagnosed with cancer and was getting treated down at the Mayo Clinic. At the start of the fall semester following a conversation between Head Coach Jackie MacMillan and Paige it seemed that everything was going well.

"She's the type of athlete who puts their head down, goes to work every single day and never makes an excuse," said MacMillan of Forsman. "She's competitive and likes to win and more than anything, she hates to lose. Three weeks ago I had been noticing changes in her on the ice during practices and on the bench during games."

After a meeting between MacMillan and Forsman, it was determined that following a full body scan in late fall that Sue's cancer had returned and had spread to other areas of the body and the prognosis was not good.

Sue is continuing treatments and Friday night's benefit will be all about the Forsman Family.

The women's team will be wearing special lavender cancer awareness uniforms that will be auctioned off following the game. There will also be chuck-a-puck contest at both games. All of the proceeds Friday night will go in support of the Forsman family to assist with medical bills.

Fans are encouraged to wear any color that represents cancer awareness.

The women's game against Trine University (Ind.) begins at 4 p.m. and the men's game against No. 14 Marian University (Wis.) starts at 7 p.m.
