Marian College Concludes Perfect MCHA Season With 2002
Championship
The Marian College Sabres ran their MCHA win streak to 27
games and concluded the 2001-2002 season at a perfect 18-0-0 (16-0
regular season/2-0 post-season) with a 7-3 victory over the
UM-Crookston Golden Eagles on Sunday (February 24) evening at the
Appleton Family Ice Center. The Sabres grabbed an early 2-0 lead
and started the third period up 5-2 on the scoreboard. They iced
the game with two empty net goals to lay claim to their second
straight MCHA Tournament Championship. Lawrence University started
Championship Sunday with a thrilling 5-4 overtime win over MSOE in
the Consolation Championship. The Vikings needed a goal with under
a minute remaining in regulation to force the extra session, and
wrapped up the victory on their first shot-on-goal in overtime.
The All-Tournament team was named at the conclusion of the
action on Sunday, with Marian College’s Terry Dunbar
(Duluth, MN) receiving MVP honors for the second-straight
season. The Sabre goalie led the squad to 4-1 and 7-3 wins on the
weekend. The rest of the All-Tournament team included forward
Jon Daigle (Marian College); forward Ryan
Blick (Lawrence University); forward Brock
Anundson (UM-Crookston); defenseman Ryan Moren
(MSOE); defenseman Dan Weymann (Marian
College); and goalie Joey Reese
(UM-Crookston).
MCHA Post-Season Awards were also given out on Saturday (February
24). MSOE Raider Ryan Moren (Lakeville, MN) was
tabbed MCHA Player-of-the-Year for the second straight season.
Marian College Head Coach Chris Brown received
MCHA Coach-of-the-Year honors. Brown led his team to an unblemished
16-0-0 mark in the regular season and included in that perfect
season: topping the MCHA in goals-per-game (6.25), goals-allowed
(1.38); power-play (28.6%), and penalty-kill (89.1%); among others.
Marian College and Lawrence
University were both recipients of the Team Sportsmanship
Award.

Stage Set for 2002 MCHA Tournament; MSOE’s Turcott Sets
Career Point Record
The last weekend of the regular season had plenty of
action in the battle for play-off positioning, and even a little
history. MSOE Raiders Senior Forward Mike Turcott
(Brookfield, WI) put his name in the MCHA Record Book when
he scored his 90th career point in league action. His power-play
goal with just :13 left in the game on Saturday (February 16) gave
him the mark, as the four-year player now has 44 goals and 46
assists in his illustrious career. The assistant captain broke the
mark of 89 (47G/42A) points held by Marian’s Dave Chipman
(1998-00) in his 59th MCHA contest in a Raider uniform. In other
action, Marian ran their MCHA win streak to 25 straight with
back-to-back blankings of Northland College and MSOE wrapped up a
second-place league finish with a split versus Lawrence. The MCHA
Tournament is all set to go…Lawrence University will be the
host and the games will be played February 22-24 at the Appleton
Family Ice Center. For complete information, go to www.mchahockey.com and click on
the Tournament link on the homepage.
Players of the Week:
-Milwaukee School of Engineering players Ryan
Moren (Lakeville, MN) and Mike Turcott
(Brookfield, WI) are the first to be selected
Co-MCHA-Players-of-the-Week this season. Moren had a great weekend
on the ice statistically with 6 points, netting a hat trick and an
assist in Friday’s tough loss to the Vikings, while adding
two assists (including one on the game-winner) from his defenseman
position in Saturday’s Raider victory that clinched second
place for the squad. This was quite a difference from last season
for Moren, as his team finished 8-8-0 this year after going 3-12-1
in conference play last season and failing to qualify for the
league tournament. Turcott was chosen for his Record Book-heroics
on Saturday that were noted above.
ALSO NOMINATED: Staurt Manning (Lawrence University); Teddy Eagle
(Marian College)
-Marian College Sabres Sophomore Goaltender Terry Dunbar
(Duluth, MN) becomes the first MCHA goalie to win
Goalie-of-the-Week three times this season. He went a perfect 2-0
on the weekend, making 15 saves in Friday (February 15)
night’s contest and keeping the Lumberjacks out of the net on
five power-play opportunities. On Saturday, he played the first
half of the contest, earning the win while making 8 saves before
giving way as the Sabres finished the regular season unbeaten and
untied at 16-0-0.
ALSO NOMINATED: Jim Pfeiffelmann (Lawrence University)
-Lawrence University Vikings Freshman Forward Danny
Schroder (Duluth, GA) gets the nod for MCHA
Rookie-of-the-Week by virtue of his hat-trick in the Vikings 7-4
victory on Friday (February 15) night. The Economics major tallied
three of Lawrence’s first four goals, and had his hat-trick
completed just 10:36 into the first period.

Sabres Stay Perfect; Second Through Fifth Place Still Up for
Grabs
The Marian College hockey ran their win streak versus
MCHA opponents to 23 in a row with a sweep of UM-Crookston in
Minnesota over the weekend. After escaping with a 2-1 win on
Friday, the Sabres responded with a 9-2 victory on Saturday to move
to 14-0-0 in league play. In other action, MSOE and Northland split
their series, meaning no other league team has locked up a spot in
the standings. That leaves a lot to be decided on the ice this
upcoming weekend, when the remainder of the regular season MCHA
slate is played out. The conference tournament is set for the
weekend after – February 22-24, 2002.
Players of the Week:
-Marian College Sabres Freshman Forward Andy
Allen (Virginia, MN) is selected the MCHA
Player-of-the-Week after a great weekend on the ice. After
assisting one of the Sabres two goals in a 2-1 win on Friday
(February 8), the Elementary Education major struck for a hat-trick
in Marian’s 9-2 contest on Saturday. Allen scored the first,
fourth, and ninth goals of the game on just four (4) shots and
added an assist for good measure. His 11 goals on the season are
second on the Marian squad.

ice.

Marian College Sabres Clinch MCHA Regular Season Title With Sweep
of MSOE
The Marian College hockey team accomplished a
program-first with their play this past weekend – they
clinched their first MCHA regular season championship by sweeping
the MSOE Raiders by scores of 8-1 and 3-2. The wins marked the
Sabres 20th and 21st victories in a row versus MCHA opponents and
were also their 17th and 18th straight over the Raiders. The
regular season championship is the first for Marian in the
four-year history of the conference, as they stay undefeated at
12-0-0.
In other league action, the Golden Eagles moved into a tie for
second-place in the conference, picking up their fifth and sixth
conference wins of the season by sweeping the Lumberjacks. Also,
the Lawrence Vikings dropped a non-conference match-up to
Finlandia. With first-place securely in the Sabres hands, second
through fifth in the standings still needs to be decided on the ice
with just two weekends and eight games of hockey action remaining
before the conference tournament.
Players of the Week:
-Marian College Sabres Freshman Forward Ian
Carroll (Peoria, IL) is tabbed MCHA Player-of-the-Week for
his work on the ice this past weekend in helping clinch the title
versus MSOE. The rookie had a goal and an assist in
Thursday’s victory and lit the lamp for two of the three
goals the Sabres tallied in their 3-2 victory Friday. His 12
points (6G/6A) are eighth in the MCHA in freshman scoring.
ALSO NOMINATED: Adam Coe (UM-Crookston)
-Marian College Sabres Sophomore Goaltender Terry Dunbar
(Duluth, MN) receives MCHA Goalie-of-the-Week honors for
the second time this season, in a closely contested week against
the Golden Eagles Joey Reese. While both players allowed just three
goals in their two wins on the weekend, Dunbar made 55 saves
compared to Reese’s 33 and kept his team undefeated against
the second-place Raiders. The Studio Art major had a save
percentage of .948 on the weekend and helped keep the Raiders
0-for-11 on power-play opportunities in the contests.
ALSO NOMINATED: Joey Reese (UM-Crookston)

Anundson (Baudette, MN) becomes the first Crookston player
(and first non-Sabre) in four weeks to get the nod for MCHA
Rookie-of-the-Week honors. The Marketing major tallied a hat-trick
on just six shot attempts versus the Lumberjacks on Saturday,
including one goal short-handed an added an assist for good
measure.

Marian Keeps Conference Mark Perfect With 18th and
19th Consecutive MCHA Wins
The beat goes on for the Sabres, as they swept the
Lawrence Vikings to extend their MCHA win streak to 19 games. Their
last loss to an MCHA foe was January 19 of last season when they
dropped a 3-1 decision to Northland College. They are currently
10-0-0 in league play heading into the final month of the season.
In other MCHA action this week, Northland College snapped their
losing streak when they defeated Bethel College behind a 60-save
performance by their goalie. UM-Crookston was back in action this
weekend, dropping a pair of games to Bethel College. There are just
13 games remaining of the MCHA regular season schedule, as teams
will try to improve their place in the standings in their upcoming
match-ups.
Players of the Week:
-Lawrence University Vikings Freshman Forward
Ryan Blick (Canton, MI) becomes the third MCHA
player - and second Viking - to win two different weekly awards, as
his selection of Rookie-of-the-Week (for the week ending 12/16/01)
goes nicely with his selection as MCHA Player-of-the-Week today
(Marian’s Jon Daigle and Lawrence's Mike Burkhart have also
won both honors). The Education major had two goals and an assist
on the weekend, including an unassisted goal on Saturday (January
26) night that tied the Sabres 3-3 before Marian pulled out the
victory. His 20 points on 9 goals and 11 assists is third on the
Lawrence squad.
-Northland College Lumberjacks Freshman Goaltender Aivars
Ziedins (Talsi, Latvia) wins MCHA Goalie-of-the-Week
honors for the second time in three weeks with his work versus
Bethel College on Monday (January 21). The freshman net-minder
earned his first collegiate win and helped the Lumberjacks snap a
14-game losing streak with an amazing 60 saves in the 6-4 win,
including 25 in the third period alone. He had a save percentage of
.938 and killed all four of the power-play opportunities of his
opponents.
-Marian College Sabres Freshman Forward Brent
Gunnlaugson (Lethbridge, Alberta) tops off a memorable
weekend on the ice by earning MCHA Rookie-of-the-Week honors. The
Sport and Recreation Management major played in his first two
collegiate games this weekend, and responded with three goals and
two assists in the sweep of Lawrence. Earning the starting nod on
Saturday, Gunnlaugson scored two goals in the first 4:50 of the
contest, including one just fifteen seconds into the action.

Four Named Hockey Humanitarian Finalists
-Compiled by US College Hockey On-Line
Staff
Past Winners |
2001 Jason Cupp, Neb.-Omaha |
Four players from varied backgrounds have been named finalists
for the 2002 Hockey Humanitarian Award, presented anually to the
player who exhibits a strong commitment to their communities, their
teams, and their studies.
This year’s finalists are Daniel Casella, Dartmouth senior;
Thomas Conti, a three-year captain at Division III
Lawrence; Rocky Reeves, a four-year captain at Buffalo State and a
two-time finalist; and Jeff Wilson, captain at Union.
The announcement of this year’s recipient will be made on
Friday, April 5 in St. Paul, Minn. as part of the festivities
surrounding NCAA Division I Frozen Four.
Daniel Casella, Dartmouth
A native of Verona, New Jersey, Casella became involved in
community service while attending Lawrence Academy. While there, he
volunteered at a soup kitchen, a senior citizens home, and shoveled
sidewalks in the neighborhood.
His work in the community continued after he matriculated at
Dartmouth. Among his activities, Casella has visited the Hanover,
N.H.,-area schools where he taught students about the dangers of
drugs. He has also coached local youth hockey programs from mites
to peewees and has been a key factor in the Big Green’s
Holiday Toy Drive.
"Despite the huge time and energy commitments that playing hockey
at a Division I school like Dartmouth College entails, Dan Casella
somehow manages to take a full course load of classes and gives
back to the community almost every day," said Dartmouth coach Bob
Gaudet. "I have had the pleasure of working with Casella for four
seasons at Dartmouth, and I can honestly say that his love for
children is greater than anyone else’s that I have ever
seen."
Casella plans has enlisted in the Peace Corps, and will be working
to rebuild a community in the Caribbean after graduation. He has a
3.03 grade point average as a government major, and has been a
solid role player for the Big Green.
"Dan is regularly the first player on the ice for practice and the
last to leave the rink," said Gaudet. "His combination of work
ethic, skill, selflessness, and courage has inspired his teammates
and endeared him to our fans."
Thomas Conti, Lawrence
Born in Summit, New Jersey and now a resident of Atlanta, Conti
is a two-sport athlete, is in Phi Beta Kappa, has been nominated
for a Rhodes Scholarship, and works with the youth in Appleton,
Wis.
One of seven children, Conti began his community involvement in
1996 when he started tutoring Vietnamese children. He continued
doing so until 1998. Other activities include helping to construct
a Habitat for Humanity home during the spring of 1999, volunteering
at the Boys and Girls Club, and participating in the Adopt-A-School
tutoring program.
In soccer, Conti has been a four-year standout and team captain
for two seasons. As a sophomore, he was a Second Team All-Midwest
Conference selection, while he was a First Team pick his junior and
senior seasons.
On the ice, he has been a four-year regular, as well. His freshman
year, he had 10 goals and 19 assists for 29 points in 15 games, and
was named Lawrence University’s Freshman Athlete of the
Year.
After his hockey statistics dropped off his sophomore year, he
bounced back as a junior with 14 goals and 9 assists for 23 points
in 25 games. The team’s MVP last year, he already holds the
school records for assists in a season and in a career, goals in a
season and in a career and points in a career.
Academically, he has a 3.857 grade point average while majoring in
math and computer science. He has received a number of academic
scholarships and is a Lawrence Presidential Scholar. Ranked in the
top six percent of his class, he has been nominated for the
prestigious Rhodes Scholarship.
"He will never say ‘No’ to anyone in need of
assistance and literally jumps at the opportunity to be of benefit
to someone else," Lawrence coach David Ruhly said. "I feel proud
that Tom is a member of my team because he demonstrates that one
can be an incredible athletic leader, a formidable academic
presence, and one of the strongest and most influential members of
the Lawrence University community."
Rocky Reeves, Buffalo State
A native of Anchorage, Alaska, Reeves is currently serving as
team captain for an unprecedented fourth year, and was also a
finalist last year.
His involvement in the Buffalo community began because of a broken
leg he sustained as a freshman in his first game with the varsity.
Rather than leave school and return to his hometown, he chose to
stay at Buffalo State. Not only did he earn a 3.41 grade point
average that year, but he also quickly got involved with both the
campus and the local community.
The activities have included the Concerned Ecumenical Ministry
Soup Kitchen; the National Condom Safe Sex Week promotion; "Take
Back the Night," celebrating the survival of sexual abuse; the
Carlysclub Cancer Fundraiser; and the Buffalo State Health Fair. He
has also organized and implemented the Holiday Rummage Sale for the
Homeless and helped distribute books to the Western New York needy
organizations through the Project FLIGHT Book Drive.
Academically, he has maintained a 3.30 GPA while majoring in
health and wellness. He received his Bachelor's degree this past
December and is currently working on his Masters.
He has been named to the SUNYAC All-Academic Team two years, was
on the SUNYAC Commissioner’s List twice, and on the
Dean’s List for three years.
Reeves has also been nominated for four other awards: the Buffalo
State President’s Medal, the Chancellor’s Award for
Academic Excellence, the Outstanding Senior Award in his major of
health and wellness, and the Outstanding Community Service Award
also in his major. The announcements of the winners of these awards
are still pending.
"Rocky defines what this award exemplifies both on and off the
ice," said Buffalo State coach Jim Fowler. "Rocky does not do all
these great things to receive the recognition, but does so because
he knows he is making a difference."
Jeff Wilson, Union College
A native of London, Ontario, Wilson has been one of the
offensive standouts for Union the past three years. Among the
team's top three scorers each year, he was his team’s leading
scorer last season.
During his athletic career, he has been named the team’s
Rookie of the Year, the team’s Most Improved Player, and its
Unsung Hero. Statistically, his best season was a year ago when he
had 12 goals and 10 assists for 22 points in 34 games.
Respected by his teammates, Wilson, who has a 2.8 GPA in English,
was the unanimous choice to serve as team captain this year.
He has also been an integral member of the Schenectady, N.Y.
community, having been involved in causes such as the "Dutchmen
Skate for Cancer," with the proceeds going to the American Cancer
Society. He's also been involved in Big Brothers and Big Sisters
Night, the Walk for Juvenile Diabetes, and visits to
children’s hospitals.
He also created "A Skating Dutchmen Christmas," during which the
team sponsored a family via social services and purchased gifts for
the family. Plus, he established "Pennies for Points," during which
sponsors donated one dollar for every point a Union player earned
during a game. The proceeds were then given to underprivileged
youth hockey players in Schenectady.
Finally, in the aftermath of the September 11th terrorist attacks,
he created "Dutchmen Skate for 9/11." The proceeds from that
fund-raiser went to the NYPD and NYFD fund, and to two local
families that were affected by the attack.
"Once in awhile, if you are a fortunate coach, you come across
certain individuals who personify what college athletics is all
about; someone who is more concerned with others than himself,"
said Union coach Kevin Sneddon. "I have experienced this in our
program for the past couple of years with one individual in
particular, Jeff Wilson.
"Jeff has not only created and designed several projects, he has
literally volunteered for all of our community services projects
during the last four years. As well, he has encouraged his fellow
teammates to become more involved in volunteer work around the
Capital District. His actions appear to be quite contagious.
"Whether he is organizing a team event within the community or
merely greeting children after games, he clearly represents our
college with class and depicts what college athletics is all
about."

to the ice of Boston University's J.P. McKersie after his brush
with death, Greenhalgh and Millman brought together a group of from
the worlds of athletics, business, education, and the media to
create this award. McKersie won that first award in 1996 because
"he represented all that can be right about sports."
Since that time, Michigan defenseman Blake Sloan won in 1997,
Wisconsin's Erik Raygor was the winner in 1998, Kristine Pierce of
the Rochester Institute of Technology won in 1999, Jim Legler of
Maine was the 2000 winner, and Jason Cupp of the University of

teams playing games next weekend (October 26-27). Defending MCHA

The MCHA season begins with a few new faces and a new-look
website.
As stated before, Mark Ostapina, previously at New England
College, will take over the reigns of the Raiders. In six seasons
at NEC, Ostapina guided the club to a 63-84-8 (.432) record. This

defending national champions Norwich, 2-1, to capture the ECAC East
championship.
Additionally, Gary Warren has been named Head Hockey Coach at
Crookston. He replaces Mark Huglen who resigned in July to pursue
his academic career full-time at UMC, and interim Head Hockey
Coach, Mike Swentik, who stepped in after Huglen to coach the
Golden Eagles for the 2000-01 season.
Previous to his hire at UMC, Warren has been the Head Hockey Coach
at MSU-Bottineau for the past 16 years. His program has experienced
many honors including three National Championships and eight Region
XII Titles. Eight of Warren's 16 years with Bottineau, he was named

Ostapina Leaves NEC for MSOE
Took Pilgrims to NCAA tournament last season
-by Jim Connelly/MAAC Correspondent for
USCHO
MILWAUKEE — After guiding New England College to its best
season in his tenure, including a berth in the NCAA Division III
tournament, head coach Mark Ostapina has resigned to become head
coach at the Milwaukee School of Engineering.
In six seasons at NEC, Ostapina guided the club to a 63-84-8
(.432) record. But this past year, the Pilgrims posted a 20-10-0
record and defeated the defending national champions Norwich, 2-1,
to capture the ECAC East championship. NEC fell to Wisconsin-River
Falls in the first round of the NCAA Championships.
Though MSOE is not known for being a national hockey power playing
in the MCHA, a league that does not currently have an automatic
qualifier to the NCAA tournament, the move will bring Ostapina
closer to his family. Ostapina is a native of Wisconsin and played
for the University of Wisconsin in the late 1970s.
As for the challenge ahead, MSOE finished last in the MCHA last
season with a 3-21-1 record, one year after setting a school record
for victories with 13. Ostapina replaces Pat Hessenauer, who
resigned from the head coach position in early April.

MSOE Coach Hessenauer
Resigns
-by Lynn Burke/D-III Staff Writer for
USCHO
MILWAUKEE — Pat Hessenauer has resigned as head coach at
Milwaukee School of Engineering, athletic director Dan Harris
confirmed Thursday, saying that the school would immediately begin
a search for a full-time coach to replace him.
"We are very committed to ice hockey." said Harris. "We're going
from a part-time coach to a full-time coach in the athletic
department. And we're increasing the budget significantly for a
sport that has a budget that's four or five times larger than any
other sport we have."
In his resignation letter, Hessenauer contested Harris' view of
things.
"Due to a lack of commitment and support from the school and those
involved, my efforts would be better spent elsewhere," said
Hessenauer. "The five years that I have spent coaching the MSOE
program has been an enjoyable and rewarding experience. I strongly
feel the program has grown tremendously under my leadership and I
wish them the best of luck in the future."
Hessenauer coached MSOE for five seasons, compiling a 51-71-7
record. The Raiders were 3-21-1 this past season after setting a
school record with 13 victories in 1999-2000.
He also served as secretary, treasurer and public relations
director of the Midwest Collegiate Hockey Association.
Hessenauer played at Wisconsin-Whitewater, He began coaching youth
hockey in his hometown of Janesville, Wis., and eventually moved
into the high school ranks.
At MSOE, he twice earned MCHA coach of the year honors. He is
finishing his communications degree at Wisconsin-Milwaukee with
plans to pursue a masters in Sports Administration. His other
duties at MSOE include director of the Red & White Booster Club
and organizing fundraising programs for the athletic programs.
Attempts to reach Hessenauer for comment were unsuccessful.
