NCAA Records and Shootouts!
It was quite the evening of hockey in the NCHA, with Adrian College putting together an unprecedented scoring display on the women’s side and a thrilling slate of closely-contested matchups on the men’s side.
Let’s start with history. The Bulldogs improved to 7-0 in the NCHA and 15-1-0 overall with dominant effort against Finlandia, lighting the lamp 19 times to establish a new NCAA record for goals in a game. AC’s 19 goals set an NCAA record for most goals in a single game snapping the previous record of 18 set by Manhattanville in 2002 and matched by Utica in 2004.
A total of four different players netted hat tricks – Jessica VonRuden finished with four, while Karmen Anderson, Jocelin Hudanish, and Annika Hanson all recorded three-goal efforts. VonRuden finished the contest with seven points (4G/3A). Adrian also fell one goal short of tying the record for most goals in a period after finishing the first period with seven. The Bulldogs totaled 50 points as a team which set an NCAA record snapping the previous record of 47 set by Utica in 2004. Finally, Adrian's 31 assists tie the NCAA record for most in a game set by Utica in 2004. The team finished with an eye-opening 106 shots.
The Trine women also had a big game, tallying a 10-0 victory over Hilbert, with Payton Hans establishing a new Thunder record with her five goals, coming on 16 shots.
Aurora improved to 6-2-1 with a 5-2 victory over Concordia Wisconsin with five unanswered goals, Marian finished off the sweep of Lawrence with a 3-1 win, and St. Norbert won again – moving to a perfect 9-0-0 in NCHA play with a 2-1 defeat of Lake Forest. The Green Knights scored twice in the final seven minutes, getting the tying and game-winning goals off the stick of Kelsey Ross.
On the men’s side, two of the four games on the night went to a shootout – Marian University grabbed the extra point following a 4-4 draw with St. Norbert, winning the shootout, 1-0. Adrian and Lake Forest played to a similar 4-4 draw, with the Bulldogs digging out of an early 3-0 hole to force OT before claiming a 3-2 shootout victory.
Lawrence blanked Finlandia, 3-0, and MSOE improved to 7-4 in NCHA play with a 5-3 victory over CUW.
