Vorva named second team All-American by CCM/AHCA

STEVENS POINT, Wis. - Junior Hunter Vorva has been named a second team All-American by the American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) becoming the first Marian men's hockey goalie to be named an All-American.

"I couldn't be happier for Hunter being selected as an All-American, he is very deserving of this award," commented head men's hockey coach Zach Gaynor.  "Hunter's presence in the locker room is electric and our team feels that they can beat anyone in the country with him in net. He has not only helped us break team records, but he has also broken several individual records and solidified himself as one of the greatest goaltenders to wear a Marian jersey. Hunter joins a great list of All-Americans and I am excited to watch him play at the highest level for years to come."

Vorva played a key role in the stingy Marian defense this season, which ranks 15th in the nation in scoring, allowing just 2.11 goals per game.  In conference games this season, Vorva posted an NCHA-best 1.55 goals against average and .945 save percentage allowing two or fewer goals in 15 of his 18 starts.  His overall stats are just as impressive, currently ranking seventh in the nation with his .937 save percentage and 13th in the country with a 1.84 goals against average. 

Overall, Vorva finished with a 1.84 goals against average, 11th in the country, and a .937 save percentage, eighth in the nation.  He was also one of only 27 goalies in the nation to record three or more shutouts on the season.  On special teams, Vorva helped lead the penalty kill to the 12th best percentage in the nation only allowing 15 goals on 124 man-advantage opportunities, or 88.1-percent.

His role since joining Marian a season ago has been immeasurable.  Last season, his first with the Sabres, he finished second in the nation in shutouts, 11th in goals against average, and 15th in winning percentage.  This led the Sabres to a 20-8-1 overall mark, which tied a program record for wins and earned Marian their first trip to the NCAA national tournament via the school's first-ever at-large bid.

This season he posted the fourth-most wins in a single season with 13 and made 696 saves putting him second in program history in the single-season records.  In his two seasons, Vorva ranks fourth in the all-time record books with 33 wins, second with seven shutouts, second with a 1.89 goals against average, sixth with 1,369 saves, and is the all-time leader for save percentage at .931.

Vorva becomes the third Sabre in the past three years to be named an All-American joining Gianni Mangone (2017) and Hunter Stewart (2018) along with Dakota Dubetz (2011) who was the program's first All-American.
