NORTHFIELD, Minn. – In a game that featured five power-play goals, Aurora University completed a weekend sweep of the St. Olaf College men's hockey team with a 4-2 victory on Saturday night at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
After senior
Will Dittrich gave St. Olaf (0-2-0) an early lead, Aurora (2-0-0) scored the game's next four goals before senior
Paul Stehr grabbed a late goal for the Oles. In his first start at St. Olaf, sophomore
Cooper Lukenda made 35 saves between the pipes in the loss.
Dittrich gave the Oles their first lead of the season after Aurora was whistled for a tripping penalty at 3:30, tipping in a shot by
Roshen Jaswal at 4:43. First year
Evan Shoemaker earned his first collegiate point with an assist after getting the puck to Jaswal at the point.
Lukenda made a sprawling pad save to deny Dylan Rauh with 17 seconds remaining in the first period after the Spartans generated a 3-on-2 rush. Aurora, however, got even at 1-1 at 5:36 of the second period on a power-play goal by Riley Doyon, his second of the weekend. The Spartans successfully killed off a 5-on-3 after committing a major penalty later in the period to keep the game tied after two.
The Spartans broke a 1-1 tie after two with three goals in the space of less than eight minutes in the third, taking the lead on a goal by Brayden Sampson, the only even-strength goal of the game, at 8:20. Power-play goals from Larry Jungwirth and Jack Jaunich 2:03 apart pushed Aurora's lead to 4-1 before Stehr capitalized on a mixup behind the Spartans' goal to tap the puck into an empty net with 2:02 remaining for his second goal in as many nights.
Josh Boyko picked up the victory for the second-straight night with a 20-save effort for Aurora, which held a 39-22 advantage in shots on goal. St. Olaf won 40 of the game's 64 faceoffs, led by Dittrich's 16-for-18 night at the dot.
The Oles hit the road for the first time this season next weekend, starting with a trip to nationally-ranked UW-Eau Claire on Friday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m.
