Wise’s goal lifts CSB to overtime win against Marian

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – After playing to an overtime tie earlier this season, the College of Saint Benedict hockey team broke through for a win in extra time Friday night.

Mollie Wise scored just over two minutes into overtime to lift the team to a 2-1 win over Marian in the first of the team's two games in Stevens Point, Wis. The win marks the second straight for Saint Benedict – which hadn't played since Dec. 1 – and its fourth of the season. CSB is now 4-4-1 overall, which doubles its win total from last season.

CSB had plenty of chances to score – 13 to be exact – in the first period, but couldn't find the back of the net. At one point in the period, Riley Schneider had back-to-back shots on net, and Courtney Conlin added a third shot. A short time later, Mollie Wise had a pair of shots, then Annika Brodt, Schneider and Zoe Culshaw-Klein all added a shot in quick succession.

Conlin finally got Saint Benedict on the board late in the second period with her fourth goal of the season. She scored at the 16:38 mark of the second off an assist from Maddie Dockry to put CSB up 1-0. That lead held until midway through the third period when Marian (3-9-2) scored unassisted to tie the game.

CSB had a pair of power play opportunities late in the third period, and Conlin had a shot that hit the pipe, but nothing went in and the game went to overtime. Saint Benedict had a few early shot attempts, and went on a power play less than 30 seconds into the start of overtime, but Marian held CSB off the board. Less than a minute after the end of the power play, however, Wise scored on assists from Dockry and Kylie Eklund to end the game and seal the win.

Saint Benedict outshot Marian 30-22, and Schneider led the team with seven shots on net. Wise added five, and Conlin and Brodt both finished with three. Julia Carle picked up the win in the net after making 21 saves. This marks her first win of the year.

CSB returns to action Saturday, Jan. 5, when it takes on host-school UW-Stevens Point at 2:30 p.m. The team wraps up the weekend Sunday at 3 p.m. with a nonconference contest against St. Olaf at the team's new on-campus rink.
