ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Special teams got plenty of time in the spotlight for both the College of Saint Benedict hockey team and Concordia-Wisconsin Friday night.
The two teams combined for 12 penalties, all three of the Bennies' goals came on the power play, and CUW also scored twice on the power play – including the game-winner in overtime. A penalty as time expired in regulation put the Falcons on the power play to start overtime, and they capitalized at the 1:16 mark to come away with a 4-3 win in the first of two games this weekend between the two teams.
Saint Benedict (0-3) dominated on the stat sheet throughout the game. The Bennies out shot the Falcons 35-23 and won 38 faceoffs to Concordia's 21. The Falcons, however, were able to capitalize on a CSB penalty when it counted the most.
Concordia (2-0) got scoring started in the first period on an even-strength goal in the sixth minute of the game. That 1-0 lead held until the second period when the Bennies scored twice on a pair of power-play goals. First year
Kennedy Morris scored the first goal of her collegiate career at the 7:52 mark off an assist from
Ava Stinnett to make it 1-1, and
Sami Boerboom made it 2-1 at 12:47 off assists from
Annika Brodt and
Emma Rooks. Boerboom is tied for the team lead with two goals this season.
That one-goal lead held until the 18-minute mark of the second period when the Falcons scored on a long shot that was tipped just over goalie
Ally Frantzick's pad.
CSB took advantage of another power play early in the third when
Jenna Timm notched her first collegiate goal 41 seconds into the period off an assist from Stinnett – her second of the night. The Falcons tied it up at the 7:03 mark on the power play to tie the game, and that's where the score stayed throughout the remainder of regulation.
The Bennies were charged with a checking penalty as time expired in regulation, so Concordia went into the overtime period with a one-skater advantage. The Falcons capitalized, scoring at the 1:16 mark to end the game.
Frantzick made 19 stops in net, including two to start the overtime period.
Zoe Culshaw-Klein led the team with seven shots on net, and
Julia Pias, Boerboom and Brodt all finished with four.
The two teams are back in action again at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, at the MAC in St. Cloud. Saturday's game marks the final tune up for the Bennies before they jump into MIAC play on Thursday, Nov. 11, against Bethel.
