LAKE FOREST, Ill. — After scoring a combined five goals in their first game of the two-game nonconference series—a 3-2 Cardinal victory—the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota and Lake Forest women's hockey teams decided to turn up the offensive heat a bit in Sunday's rematch.
Â
In fact, the two teams scored as many goals in the first period Sunday as they had in the entire 60-minute game the previous evening.
Â
By the time the dust finally settled at Alumni Memorial Arena, the Cardinals and Foresters had lit the lamp a combined nine times.
Â
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, it was the Foresters whose offense proved to be just a bit more explosive, as Lake Forest scored a pair of third-period goals three minutes apart to break open a one-goal game and deal Saint Mary's a 6-3 setback.
Â
For the second straight game, the Foresters got on the board quickly, scoring just 2:50 into the opening period on a goal by Amy Belde.
Â
That goal was just the tip of the first-period iceberg.
Â
Just 1:01 after Belde's tally, it was the Cardinals' turn, as
Jamie Henderson (Madison, Wis.) found the back of the net for the second game in a row, beating Lake Forest goalie Jacque Rogers to make it 1-1.
Â
The deadlock did not last long, however—in fact, it lasted all of 26 seconds.
Â
Lake Forest regained the upper hand just 26 seconds after Henderson's tally, getting a goal from Olivia Spellmire to give the Foresters a 2-1 advantage.
Â
It took the Cardinals eight minutes to answer Spellmire's goal, but answer they did, getting a game-tying goal from
Jesse Cwik (Chicago, Ill.) off an assist from
Courtney Moser (Blaine, Minn.) to pull Saint Mary's even, 2-2.
Â
Lake Forest closed out the chaotic first period by netting its third goal of the frame—coming off the stick of Lexi Morgan at 17:56—to give the Foresters a 3-2 edge heading into the locker room.
Â
The Foresters grabbed the game's first two-goal advantage, 4-2, midway through the second period, as Morgan netted her second of the game—and team-leading 14
th of the season—only to have Saint Mary's get one back with 1:18 remaining on a goal by
Anya Hafiz (Woodbury, Minn.).
Â
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Hafiz's goal would be their final offensive highlight, as Lake Forest added its fifth and sixth goals of the game in a three-minute span late in the third period to ice the nonconference win.
Â
Ary Ziakas (Palatine, Ill.) was busy between the pipes for the Cardinals, posting a career-high 41 saves, while Rogers stopped 21 of Saint Mary's 24 shots for the Foresters.
Â
The Cardinals (7-6-0 overall) return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next weekend, hosting Concordia in a pair of contests at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena. Saint Mary's and CC will play at 7 p.m. on Friday, with the rematch taking place at 2 p.m. the following afternoon.
