Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Late four-goal comeback not enough for men's hockey in OT loss

FOND DU LAC, Wis. – The St. Olaf College men's hockey team stormed back from a 4-0 deficit midway through the third period to send the game to overtime before Marian University scored in the final minute of the 3-on-3 extra session to claim a 5-4 victory on Sunday afternoon at Blue Line Family Ice Center.

Marian (5-3-1) led 2-0 after one period, 3-0 after two periods, and 4-0 midway through the third before St. Olaf (3-5-2) mounted a late comeback with four unanswered goals in the final 9:42 of regulation to send the game to overtime. After the Oles nearly won the game in the opening minute of the extra session, Mason Richey scored on a rebound after Alex Rondeau hit the pipe as the Sabres escaped with the series sweep.

With St. Olaf trailing 4-0 and less than 10 minutes remaining, first year Sean Walsh started the comeback by evading a couple of bodies sliding on the ice and scoring from in close off an assist from classmate Ethan Hersant. The goal was Walsh's fourth of the year, while Hersant picked up his eighth point this season to tie for the team lead.

The Sabres still led 4-1 with five minutes to go before the Oles scored three times in the final 4:09 of regulation to force overtime. Senior Mitch Dolter netted his second goal of the season at the 15:51 mark to make it a two-goal game, firing a backhand into an open net after the puck fell to him in front.

Inside the final two minutes of the third period, first year Matthew Pointer intercepted a pass deep in the Marian defensive zone and scored unassisted for his fourth goal of the season. Still trailing by a goal, the Oles pulled their goalie with 1:15 remaining and found a tying goal 31 seconds later when first year Troy Bowditch put home a rebound in front to cap the four-goal rally.

St. Olaf got control of the puck early in the 3-on-3 overtime and nearly won the game 37 seconds in, but Marian's Colby Muise kept out a fluttering shot by Walsh. After that, the Sabres possessed the puck for most of the overtime and their pressure eventually paid off, as Richey scored right after Rondeau hit the pipe with 59.7 seconds to go.

Marian held a 37-35 advantage in shots on goal in the game and got a 31-save effort from Muise in the win. Muise had 15 of his 31 saves in the third period, as St. Olaf generated 35 shots on goal in the third after having just 13 through two periods.

First year Lukas Haugen suffered the loss in his collegiate debut after recording 17 saves in 26:37 between the pipes in relief of senior Colin Cain, who had 15 saves over the first 36:53.

The Oles return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play at Saint Mary's on Friday, Dec. 3 at 7 p.m. in Winona.
