Royals Early Burst Leads to 6-3 Victory at Concordia-Wisconsin

MEQUON, Wis. - The Bethel University women's hockey team showed no signs of rust coming off the semester break as they scored the games first three goals within the first 12 minutes of the first period and went on to claim a 6-3 victory over the Concordia University-Wisconsin Falcons. Bethel fired off 44 shots in the game compared to just 22 for CUW as the Royals built leads of 3-0 and 5-2 before the 6-3 final.

Just 44 seconds into the first period, the Royals first action since December 8th, Bri Stafne scored Bethel's first goal off assists from Emma Johnson and Kennedi Mitchell. Wendy Roberts then scored Bethel's second goal at 8:37 in the first with another assist from Johnson. Three minutes later Sarah Moy gave the Royals a 3-0 lead with a score with assits to Roberts and Erika Geary. The Falcons were able to strike twice themselves before the end of the first period at 12:16 and 15:07 to make the score 3-2 heading into the second frame. After combining for five goals in the first period, the only score in the second came from Bethel's Briita Nelson at 12:04. Kaitlyn VanTassel and Bailey Thompson assisted. Nelson opened the scoring in the third period with another goal five minutes in with assists from Stafne and VanTassel. The Falcons drew within two scores with a goal midway through the third period to make it 5-3 but that was as close as they would come. Natalie Simons scored with just 13 seconds remaining in the game off an assist from VanTassel for the 6-3 final.

Maggie Straka made 19 saves, including 10 in the third period, to get the win in net for the Royals. Bethel was whistled for just two penalties in the game.

The win improves Bethel's overall record to 4-7-1 on the season and snapped a three game losing skid. The Royals and Falcons will square off again Saturday at 3 p.m.
