Brodt, Pias come up big as CSB ties CUW

MEQUON, Wis. – Annika Brodt and Julia Pias had to have their hands in everything for the College of Saint Benedict hockey team Saturday afternoon.

Brodt notched two goals and an assist and Pias scored once and assisted on both of Brodt's goals as the Bennies skated to a 3-3 overtime tie with Concordia-Wisconsin to wrap up its road trip in Mequon, Wis. CSB is now 5-4-1 overall as it returns home for a nonconference home series against Finlandia next weekend.

In Brodt's first multi-goal game of her career, she got Saint Benedict on the board less than four minutes into the first period when she scored off assists from Pias and Maria Wallace. That goal came after CSB put five shots up on the Falcons, including three straight from Reegan Patnode. The two teams were scoreless the remainder of the first period, although the Bennies had 13 more shots on net while holding CUW to just three.

The Falcons (2-6-2) tied the game at the 2:43 mark of the second period, and the score stayed tied for the remaining 17 minutes of the period. Riley Schneider had a shot that hit the pipe, and CSB finished the period with 11 shots, but none of them went in, so the game was tied 1-1 heading into the final 20 minutes of play.

Brodt broke the scoreless tie at the 8:52 mark of the third to put CSB up 2-1 – off another assist from Pias to mark the first multi-assist game of her career – but Concordia scored twice in four minutes, including once on the power play, to take a 3-2 lead. The Falcons' first goal of the third came on the power play at the 10:40 mark, and the second came at the 14:49 mark. Pias tied the game 3-3 with her second goal of the season at the 16:04 mark off assist from Brodt and Emily Lemker, and that's where the score stayed at the end of regulation.

Lemker and Mollie Wise had shots on net early in overtime, and Ally Frantzick had four saves within a minute, and neither team was able to find the back of the net.

Frantzick finished with 23 saves – including four in overtime – to bring her weekend total to 48 saves to help her team go 1-0-1 to start 2020. Saint Benedict outshot the Falcons 44-26, and Pias led the team with seven shots on net. Brodt added five and Annie Luzum, Myka Stave and Reegan Patnode all added four.

CSB plays at home for the first time in 2020 Friday and Saturday, Jan. 10-11, when it hosts Finlandia. This marks the first meeting between the two teams since 2011.
