Gerasimov nets first shutout in season-opening win

MINNEAPOLIS -- Recording his first career shutout with a 33-save effort, goalie Daniil Gerasimov (JR, Moscow, Russia/State School 1944) delivered a season-opening victory for the Augsburg University men's hockey team, a 3-0 nonconference triumph over the College of St. Scholastica on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Making the eighth start and 11th appearance of his college career in goal, Gerasimov had a stellar game for the Auggies, stopping seven shots in the first period, 15 in the second and 11 in the third to score his first collegiate shutout. Gerasimov is now 7-2-0 in his college career with a 2.17 career goals against-average and .926 save percentage.
• The first goal of the season for the Auggies came at the 11:08 mark of the opening period, as Austin Martinsen (JR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) took a faceoff win from Grant Reichenbacher (FY, Verona, Wis./Madison Edgewood HS), slid left and snapped a rising wrist shot to the upper right corner of the net.
• The Auggies gained two insurance goals in an 11-second span in the closing minutes of the game. Defenseman Matt Nehls (JR, Boulder, Colo./D.C. West HS) dumped the puck on a perfect angle off the end board, finding Gunnar Goodmanson (JR, Buffalo, Minn./Buffalo HS) in front, who tucked a shot in the low right corner of the net at the 18:00 mark of the third period. Erik Palmqvist (FY, Linkoping, Sweden/Anderstorpsgymnasiet) received the second assist on the goal. Eleven seconds later, the Auggies struck again. After gaining possession off the draw, the puck was dumped into the left corner by Matt Hines (SO, Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins HS), where Charlie Parker (JR, Verona, Wis./Verona HS) fed the puck to Palmqvist in front for his first collegiate goal.
• St. Scholastica outshot Augsburg by a 33-21 margin in the game.
• Augsburg entered the 2019-20 season tied for the No. 7 spot in the preseason USCHO.com Division III national poll.
 
FOR THE FOES
• Zane Steeves had 18 saves in goal for St. Scholastica.
• Tyler Hinterser and Michael Talbot had four shots each for the Saints.
