14th-Ranked Spartans Skate Past Falcons

MEQUON, Wis. – The Falcons short on Wednesday afternoon in an NCHA matchup against the 14th-ranked Spartans of Aurora. The Spartans skated away with an 8-2 victory to jump Trine for third place in the NCHA standings.

The Spartans struck first on Wednesday with a goal in the second minute of the game.

The Falcons leveled the game on the power play 20 seconds later. Sophomore Jordan Guiney (Victoria, B.C.) sniped in a shot from passes from senior Luc Kreuser (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) and senior Cory Dennis (Madison, Wis.).

The Black and Blue scored the next three goals in the game.

Sophomore Jacob Shankar (Johnstown, Ont.) snuck past the Aurora defense and scored on a breakaway goal off a pass from freshman Andrew Malek (Milwaukee, Wis.) and a secondary assist from senior Salvatore Scalise (Calgary, Alta.) in the second period.

The Spartans outscored the Falcons in the third period 4-0, with two power-play goals.

Aurora took advantage of the CUW penalties and scored four times on the power play.

Sophomore Liam McGarva (Fort Saskatchewan, Alta.) battled for the whole 60 minutes with 53 saves.

The Spartans outshot the Falcons on Wednesday, 61-29. Jordan Guiney led the flock with six shots and nine faceoff victories.

The Falcons celebrate Senior Night on Friday night against the Lions of Finlandia.
