Auggie season ends with loss in national semifinals

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- The Augsburg University men's hockey team's season came to an end in the NCAA Division III national semifinals, as top-ranked Adrian University claimed a 5-1 victory on Friday afternoon at the Herb Brooks Arena.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE:
 Adrian (Mich.) 5, Augsburg 1
LOCATION: Herb Brooks Arena, Lake Placid, N.Y.
RECORDS: Augsburg 25-5-0 overall, Adrian 30-1-0 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• In claiming its 30th straight victory, Adrian outshot Augsburg by a 37-21 margin in the game. The Bulldogs scored goals 1:26 apart late in the first period, then after Augsburg cut the lead to 2-1 on a goal from Austin Dollimer (SR, Rosemount, Minn./Rosemount HS) at the 6:20 mark of the third period, Adrian recaptured the two-goal lead with a tally just 2:06 later. Two empty-net goals in the closing minutes sealed the semifinal win for the Bulldogs.
• Dollimer scored his 10th goal of the season in the second period, gaining the puck off a center-ice steal by Fritz Belisle (JR, Red Wing, Minn./Roseville Area HS) and sprinting up the middle to score on a shot from the slot.
• Samuel Vyletelka (FY, Zilina, Slovakia/Grammar School of St. Francis of Assisi), making his second straight start after getting the win in Augsburg's 4-1 win over St. Norbert in last Saturday's national quarterfinal game, was superb in goal for the Auggies, collecting 32 saves.
• Augsburg's penalty kill, the No. 2-ranked kill in the Division III national statistics, was successful in killing all four of Adrian's power-play opportunities, but the Auggies were unable to get a power-play goal of their own in four opportunities, including a 5-on-3 opportunity midway through the second period.
• The win was the second for Adrian over Augsburg this season, after claiming a 5-2 win in a game on Dec. 30 in Adrian, Mich. The Bulldogs will face the winner of Friday's semifinal between Geneseo State (N.Y., 23-3-0) and the University of New England (Maine, 23-3-0) in Saturday's national championship game.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• It is the third time that Augsburg has appeared in the national semifinals in program history, after finishing in fourth place in both 1984 and 1998. Augsburg is now 5-9-1 all-time in NCAA Division III national tournament history, making its seventh appearance in the national tourney.
• First-year head coach Greg May has led Augsburg to its second-most wins in a season in school history at 25-5-0, behind the 1981-82 NAIA national champion Auggies, which went 28-1-1.
• Friday's game marked the final collegiate contest for eight Augsburg seniors -- Dollimer, Jarod Blackowiak (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS), Gavin Holland (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS), Austin Koss (SR, Huntington Beach, Calif./Huntington Beach HS), Austin Martinsen (SR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS), Lucas Niezelski (SR, Manchester, Conn./East Catholic HS), Patrick O'Connor (SR, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS) and Nick Woodward (SR, Dubuque, Iowa/Dubuque HS).
• The eight Auggie seniors combined for two Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference regular-season championships, three trips to the MIAC postseason tournament, an MIAC playoff title, two NCAA Division III national tournament appearances, a 64-21-4 (.742) overall record and a 37-10-3 (.770) MIAC record over the last four years.
