W Hockey Explodes In Third Period Past Falcons

10/28/2016 10:21:00 PM

Box Score It was a very satisfying way to start a hockey season. Newcomers Darby Dodds (pictured) and Bre Simon scored two goals each as Hamline's women team broke a 2-all tie in the third period and tore away from Concordia (WI), 5-2, Friday night at Oscar Johnson Arena in the season opener for both teams.

Jena Kosley had the other Piper goal and Jaime Hathaway had a solid game in goal with 32 saves -- half of which came in the second period to help the Pipers to their first season opening win since 2010.

The Falcons scored first but Dodds changed the momentum of the game with a pair of goals 28 seconds apart midway in the period. Concordia controlled the middle frame with a 16-3 edge in shots on goal. However, Hathaway was beaten on just one shot and the game was deadlocked at 2 after two.

Kosley broke the tie for good when she tipped Dani Wright's blue line shot home at 5:57 of the third. Simon finished matters off with goals two and a half minutes apart in the later stages of the period.

Dodge, a junior transfer from Lindenwood College playing her first game for HU, led the team's 26 shot attack with five while Kosley and Simon added four apiece.

The teams meet again Saturday at Oscar Johnson. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
