Augsburg men's hockey season ends at St. Norbert

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. -- Building a 3-0 lead and holding off a second-period Augsburg University comeback, St. Norbert College (Wis.) advanced to the NCAA Division III national semifinals with a 5-2 quarterfinal win over the Auggies on Saturday evening at the Cornerstone Community Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Trailing 3-0 to the Green Knights 28 seconds into the second period, Augsburg scored twice in the frame to trim the advantage to 3-2. Chandler Madry (JR, Bakersfield, Calif./Fairbanks (Alaska) BEST HS) completed a 3-on-2 rush from Jake Larson (JR, St. Michael, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville HS) and Alex Rodriguez (JR, Miami, Fla./Shattuck-St. Mary's (Minn.) HS) at the 3:11 mark.
Luke Dietsch (JR, St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall HS) scored on a rebound of his own shot, assisted by Nate Flynn (SR, Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) and Drew Anderson (SR, Rochester, Minn./Century HS), at the 11:16 mark.
• St. Norbert outshot Augsburg by a 37-25 margin in the game, including a 14-5 margin in the third period. The Green Knights took a 4-2 lead at the 8:56 mark of the third period, after a rebound off a shot was deflected into the net by an Augsburg defender, and an empty-net goal sealed the win.
• Nick Schmit (JR, Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) had 32 saves in goal for Augsburg.

• The meeting was the third straight between Augsburg and St. Norbert in the NCAA quarterfinals in Ashwaubenon, with St. Norbert winning all three. The Green Knights are currently ranked No. 1 in both major Division III national polls, while Augsburg is ranked No. 11 by USCHO.com and No. 14 by D3hockey.com.
• In its fifth trip to the NCAA national tournament in program history and third in a row (1984, 1998, 2016, 2017, 2018), Augsburg is now 4-7-1 all-time in NCAA tournament play.
• The game marked the final collegiate contest for 10 Augsburg seniors, which were part of three straight Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference playoff titles and the conference regular-season crown in 2015-16. Seniors Anderson, Flynn, Brett Bukowski (SR, Superior, Wis./Superior HS), Andrew Faust (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Hill-Murray HS), Evan Hesse (SR, Monticello, Minn./Palmer (Alaska) HS), Eli May (SR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS), Adam Pancoast (SR, Thief River Falls, Minn./Thief River Falls HS), Max Pernhem (SR, Stockholm, Sweden/Dragonskolan), Will Peterson (SR, Eagan, Minn./Eagan HS) and Billy Wagner (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) put together a 65-38-8 record in their four seasons.

FOR THE FOES
• Luke Karakas, Chris Rygus and Peter Bates scored goals for St. Norbert, as the Green Knights built a 3-0 lead. Keegan Milligan pocketed an empty-net goal with 1:15 left to play.
• T.J. Black had 23 saves in goal for the Green Knights, who advance to face Colby (Maine) in the NCAA Division III national semifinals next Friday (3/23) in Lake Placid, N.Y. Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Salve Regina (R.I.) will meet in the other semifinal, with the winners to meet next Saturday (3/24) for the national title.
