Nichols Tripped Up By #11 Wisconsin-Superior, 6-2

SUPERIOR, Wis. - Sophomore Joe Sposit (Cleveland, Ohio) and first-year Frank Butler (East Haven, Conn.) scored 23 second apart in the third period as the Nichols College men's ice hockey team fell to #11 Wisconsin-Superior, 6-2, on Friday night at Siinto S. Wessman Arena. With the win, the Yellowjackets move to 10-3-1 on the season while the Bison slip to 8-5-0.
 
Wisconsin-Superior held a 6-0 advantage before Sposit banged a puck past the Yellowjacket goaltender, ending the hosts' shutout bid at 14:40 in the final frame. He received help from sophomore Brett Jackson (Larchmont, N.Y.). Butler then notched a power play goal from a shallow angle courtesy of assistance from Sposit and first-year Tyler Beasley (Indianapolis, Ind.).
 
The Bison and Yellowjackets battled through a scoreless first period as Nichols held a slim 10-9 edge in shots and had the only power play chance of the stanza.
 
With 45 seconds remaining on an extra man opportunity that carried over from the first period, junior Pat Dalbec (Superior, Wis.) potted a goal at the 41 second mark of the middle frame. Jeff Forsythe (Campbell River, British Columbia) followed up with a goal of his own at 12:54 for the 2-0 Yellowjacket lead. Wisconsin-Superior outshot the Bison 15-4 in the middle stanza and went 1-for-1 on the power play while the Bison went 0-for-1.
 
The hosts the erupted with four third period tallies with one each from sophomore Cody Hotchkin (Duluth, Minn.), Dalbec, Forsuythe and sophomore Tanner Dion (Hardisty, Alberta) to take the 6-0 lead.
 
Yellowjacket junior goaltender Drew Strandberg (Thunder Bay, Ontario) made 17 stops in the victory. Bison first-year netminders Alex Larson (Madison, Ala.) and Patrick Salkind (Springfield, Va.) shared time between the pipes combining for 31 saves.
 
Both teams return to Wessman Arena tomorrow night. Nichols takes on Finlandia at 5:00 p.m. EST while The Yellowjackets face Curry at 8:05 p.m. EST.
