Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Four-goal third period gives women's hockey fourth win in a row

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's hockey team used a four-goal third period to down Trine University, 4-1, and compete its second-straight sweep to start the season on Saturday afternoon at St. Olaf Ice Arena.

Trine (1-3-0) held a 1-0 lead after two periods on a first-period goal by Theresa DiMaggio, but St. Olaf (4-0-0) lit the lamp four times in the final 20 minutes thanks to goals from first year Lauren Spear, senior Emma Boyer, junior Annika Patterson, and first year Kate Carfagnini. The Oles' four-game winning streak is the program's longest since winning five in a row from Nov. 30, 2012 through Jan. 18, 2013.

After DiMaggio opened the scoring at 12:15 of the opening period, the visitors maintained the one-goal advantage through the second period before St. Olaf's four-goal final 20 minutes. The Oles had 23 shots on goal through two periods before tallying 14 in the third period.

With St. Olaf down a goal, Spear tallied her second goal of the season just 16 seconds into the third period to knot the score at 1-1. Spear's goal came as she tipped in a shot by sophomore Lexie Ligday, who picked up her first point of the season.

A little over five minutes later, the Oles went ahead for good as Boyer scored on the power play for the second-straight game, jamming the puck on from the doorstep after the puck came loose on a shot by first year Grace Lankas.

Playing with the lead for the first time in the game, St. Olaf added another goal less than three minutes later when Patterson scored her fourth goal in as many games by putting in a rebound after her initial attempt was saved.

Carfagnini closed out the scoring with an empty-net goal with 1:15 to go, chipping the puck out of the zone, throwing the puck at the net from a sharp angle, and scoring on the backhand on the rebound.

Senior Grace Boswell-Healey stopped 25 of the 26 shots she faced to pick up her second victory of the season, while Emily Nettesheim had 33 saves in the loss for Trine.

St. Olaf opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Friday, Nov. 12 at home against conference newcomer St. Scholastica at 7 p.m.
