Auggie men's hockey opens season with big sweep

MINNEAPOLIS -- Claiming its first series sweep of St. Norbert College since the 1992-93 season, the Augsburg University men's hockey team used a game-opening flurry to claim a 4-1 nonconference win over the No. 8-ranked Green Knights on Saturday afternoon at Ed Saugestad Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Gavin Holland (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) claimed his second straight two-goal game, scoring twice in the opening 9:41 of play, as Augsburg took an early 3-0 lead. Holland notched his first goal just 19 seconds into the game, assisted by linemates Austin Martinsen (SR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) and Jarod Blackowiak (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS).
• The Auggies took a 2-0 lead at the 62-second mark of the game, with Keenen Lund (JR, Startell, Minn./Sartell HS), a transfer from Division I Air Force (Colo.), scoring his first goal as an Auggie, assisted by Erik Palmqvist (JR, Linkoping, Sweden/Anderstorpsgymnasiet). 
• Holland's second goal of the game came at the 9:41 mark of the opening frame, scoring from Nick Woodward (SR, Dubuque, Iowa/Dubuque HS) and Martinsen.
• The Auggies added an empty-net goal at the 17:26 mark of the third period, with Fritz Belisle (JR, Red Wing, Minn./Roseville Area HS) scoring from Mason Palmer (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS).
• Augsburg held an 11-7 advantage in shots on-goal in the first period, and held firm in the final two periods, as the Green Knights outshot the Auggies 23-12 margin, en route to a 30-23 advantage in the game.
• Goalie Jack Robbel (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) claimed his second win of the weekend, collecting 29 saves. He stopped 56 of the 58 shots he faced against the Green Knights on the weekend, a .966 save percentage.

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
• The weekend sweep was Augsburg's first over St. Norbert since the 1992-93 season, when the Auggies completed an eight-game, four-season winning streak over the Green Knights with wins of 13-2 and 7-3 at Augsburg. Since 1988-89, the Auggies are 13-12-2 all-time against the Green Knights, though St. Norbert has won 10 of the last 15 meetings against Augsburg (10-4-1 since 2005-06).

FOR THE FOES
• Adam Stacho scored St. Norbert's lone goal at the 10:27 mark of the first period, assisted by Tim Nicksic.
• Starting goalie Riley Kohonick made one save in the opening 9:41. Johnny Roberts relieved him in goal and made 18 saves the rest of the way.
