Carle makes 35 saves in loss to Falcons

BLAINE, Minn. – After a big win Friday to start the season, the College of Saint Benedict hockey team was hoping for another big W Saturday afternoon, but Concordia-Wisconsin had other ideas. The Falcons scored at least once in every period en route to a 4-2 win Saturday at the Schwan Super Rink in Blaine.

Senior goalie Julia Carle was solid in the first start of her senior season, and finished the night with 35 saves to keep CSB (1-1) in the game. She had 18 saves in the first period alone to help Saint Benedict keep things close after being outshot 19-8.

Saint Benedict got several penalties early, and fought off a 5-on-3 situation after being called for both a slashing penalty and a checking penalty. After fighting off the two-woman penalty kill, however, CSB gave up a shorthanded goal in the final seconds of the 5-on-4 as the Falcons scored at the 10:51 mark.

That 1-0 lead held for Concordia for the remainder of the first period, but CSB tied the game less than three minutes into the second period when Rylan Bistodeau scored the first goal of her sophomore season on assists from Julia Pias and Bre Hess at 2:28. Concordia took a 2-1 lead at the 9:30 mark of the second period, and made it 3-1 4:06 into the third period.

The Falcons made it 4-1 with another power play goal three minutes later, but CSB doesn't done quite yet. Maddie Dockry scored her second goal of the season with 59 seconds left to play when she took a pass from Annika Brodt and sent the puck over the goalie's left shoulder and into the back of the net. Carle looked to vacate the net in the final minute to give the team an extra skater and make it a one-goal game, but the Falcons kept the puck in CSB's zone, and held on for the win.

After being outshot 19-8 in the first period, shots evened out in the second two periods, and the Falcons finished with 39 shots to Saint Benedict's 30. Courtney Conlin and Bistodeau both finished with four shots on net for CSB. Carle had 35 saves to Concordia's 28.

CSB is off now until Thursday, Nov. 8, when it opens MIAC play against Hamline – which is in the top 10 of the USCHO preseason poll after finishing third in the nation last season.
