Hockey completes weekend with 5-2 win over Finlandia

ST. PAUL, Minn. -  The Wildcat hockey team is off to a 2-0 start to the season with a 5-2 win over Finlandia University on Saturday to close out the weekend series at Drake Arena. 

Finlandia scored first at 2:53 in the opening period before sophomore center Sophia Gorski tied the non-conference game at 6:56 off the clock. Gorski's second goal of the season was assisted by rookie defenseman Kaitlyn Blair, her first of her collegiate career.

The Lions were able to find the back of the net again with 30 seconds remaining in the 1st period. 

Gorski tied the game again at 9:45 in the 2nd period for her third goal of the season assisted by rookie forwards Laura Denchfield and  Lindsey Hays

First-year forward Nicole Maddox scored her third goal of the season and an unassisted game-winner on the power play effort closing out the period 3-2 St. Catherine. 

Senior captain Lexi Muller scored the WIldcats' fourth goal at 15:46 in the 3rd period getting the assist from junior forward Emilee Anderson and rookie forward Marie Reimer

Blair scored her first collegiate goal with just one minute and 19 seconds left in the game on an empty net. Her goal was assisted by Denchfield for her second assist of the night. 

Six Wildcats had three-point weekends with Gorski and Maddox both with three goals. Denchfield and Anderson both had one goal and two assists while Reimer and Hays recorded three assists. 

Eight others had at least one or two points as four of them clinched their first collegiate point. 

Junior Bryce Boreen earned the win after replacing starting goaltender Elizabeth Kubicek who suffered an injury in the middle of the second period. Boreen made eight saves allowing zero goals. 

Next up for St. Catherine is Marian University on November 9 in Fon Du Lac, Wisconsin with puck drop scheduled for 1 pm.
