LAKE FOREST, Ill. — The Saint Mary's University and Lake Forest women's hockey teams entered Saturday's nonconference game sitting on opposite ends of the offensive spectrum.

The Cardinals took the ice having dropped back-to-back contests—managing just two goals in that two-game span.

Lake Forest, meanwhile, was riding a seven-game winning streak, and had outscored those seven opponents by a combined 66-3—including five games in which the Foresters scored eight or more goals.

Fortunately, thanks to two goals in a 21-second span in the third period, both streaks came to an abrupt end.

Saint Mary's got the game-tying goal from Jamie Henderson (Madison, WIs.) at 9:38 of the second period and the game-winner from Kayla Henning  (Burnsville, Minn.) 21 seconds later, as the Cardinals snapped their two-game losing streak—and the Foresters' seven-game win streak—with a 3-2 victory at Alumni Memorial Arena.

The Foresters did not waste any time putting their high-powered offense on display, as Kayla Griffith beat Saint Mary's goalie Ashley Corcoran (Red Wing, Minn.) just 3:45 into the opening period.

Lake Forest would maintain that one-goal advantage through the remainder of the first period—and the first nine minutes of the second—before the Cardinals' offense finally came to life.

Saint Mary's—held scoreless for four straight periods—broke through at 9:13 of the middle frame, as Courtney Moser (Blaine, Minn.) netted an unassisted tally to pull the Cardinals even, 1-1.

The Foresters regained the lead late in the second period—very late—as Sydney Simone scored with one second remaining to give Lake Forest the 2-1 lead heading into the third and final 20-minute period.

For the second straight period, the Cardinals found the back of the net in the ninth minute of the period, as Henderson made it a 2-2 game at 9:38, and, 21 seconds later, Saint Mary's had its first lead, 3-2—thanks to an unassisted goal by Henning.

Corcoran kicked out 32 of Lake Forest's 34 shots on goal for the Cardinals, while Forester goalie Jacquie Audet made 23 saves.

The Cardinals (6-6-0 overall) return to Alumni Memorial Rink on Sunday for the second game of their two-game nonconference series against Lake Forest. Opening faceoff is slated for 2 p.m.
