Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Patterson scores in women's hockey's 2-1 loss to Aurora

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Sophomore Annika Patterson scored her second goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1 late in the second period, but Aurora University completed a sweep of the St. Olaf College women's hockey team with a 2-1 victory on Saturday afternoon at St. Olaf Ice Arena.

After Lexie Martinez scored her fourth goal of the weekend midway through the first period to give Aurora (4-0-0) the lead, Patterson evened it up on the power play at 15:12 of the second for St. Olaf (0-4-0). The score remained tied until Taylor Sims netted the game-winner at 8:58 of the third to keep the Spartans unbeaten on the season.

Following a hat trick on Friday night, Martinez opened the scoring at 9:45 of the first period on an Aurora power play, putting home a rebound after sophomore Ivy Shonka saved a shot by Mak Cooke. Shonka made 17 saves in the opening period to keep the deficit at one goal after 20 minutes.

The Spartans nursed their one-goal lead until Patterson netted her second power-play goal of the season by lifting a backhand over the glove of Chiara Pfosi from the bottom of the left circle after collecting the puck off passes from senior Johanna Glaaser and first year Chloe LaFond. LaFond's assist was her first collegiate point.

In the third, the Oles killed off a minor penalty in the first six minutes shortly before Aurora's Emma Martel hit the pipe. Less than five minutes later, Sims provided the deciding goal, putting in a loose puck in front after a sharp-angle shot by Olivia Matson.

St. Olaf generated five shots on goal in search of a second tying goal, but Pfosi stopped all five to give the Spartans the road sweep. Pfosi finished the game with 24 saves, 17 of which came in the second period, while Shonka had a career-high 36 stops for the Oles.

St. Olaf opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play by taking on nationally-ranked St. Thomas on Friday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. in St. Paul.
