Simon Hat Trick Paces Pipers Past Saints

1/9/2018 9:49:00 PM

Box Score For the second time in three games, it was hats off to Hamline women's hockey forward Bre Simon. The sophomore scored three goals and added an assist as the Pipers jumped on St. Scholastica early and never let up in a 9-3 victory Tuesday night at TRIA rink. Hamline tied a school record with seven straight games without a loss and improved its overall record to 10-2-1 with the triumph.

Hours after learning they had cracked the d3hockey.com Top Ten for the first time in school history, HU scored three unanswered goals in the first period. Leah Schwartzman started the party at 8:44 with Madison Kolbow and Simon following suit. Jordan Hansen and Taylor Ramthun made it 5-0 in the second before the Saints, who had lost just one game prior to Tuesday, came back two of their own.

Any comeback thoughts CSS had went away when Simon, who is the reigning MIAC Women's Hockey Athlete of the Week, scored 11 seconds into the final frame. Sarah Bobrowski added a pair of tallies and Simon earned her second hat trick in three games with a final marker. The Elk River, Minn. native leads the MIAC in goals with 15. Her 24 points ranks second to Bobrowski (who also had two assists Tuesday), who has 26.

HU finished the night with 52 shots on goal. Mckenna Hulslander knocked away 15 shots in goal to earn the victory.

Hamline turns its sights back to the MIAC race this weekend. HU is tied for first place with Gustavus Adolphus at 5-1-0. This weekend's foe -- Augsburg -- is a mere point behind with a 4-1-1 league standard. The team face off at TRIA on Friday, January 12 at 5:00 p.m. The rematch is Saturday, January 13 at Augsburg Arena.
