Royals Complete Sweep of LumberJills

BLAINE, Minn. - The Bethel University women's hockey team finished off a series sweep of the Northland College LumberJills by a 5-2 score Saturday afternoon in Bethel University Arena. The Royals used a second period burst, scoring three goals in the final nine minutes of the second, to take a 3-1 lead and never looked back.

The LumberJills opened the scoring in the contest with a goal just 3:22 into the game. Northland held a 17-15 advantage in shots on goal in the first period. Bethel would take control in the second period though, outshooting NC 19-10 and scoring three times. Bri Stafne was the first Royal to score, creating a breakaway and putting a pair of great moves on the Northland goalie to finish at 11:11 in the second. Grace Halvorson helped spring Stafne and was credited with the assist. Kirsten Olson gave the Royals their first lead with a score at 13:08 off assists from Erika Geary and Halvorson. Geary would get the Royals next score late in the second off an assist from Emma Ness.

Stafne started off the third period with a rifle shot which hit off the pipe and ricocheted off the NC goalie and into the net. Freshman Lexi DeBace scored her first collegiate goal midway through the third with an assist by Geary and Annie Gydesen. Northland scored on a power play with just 15 seconds left after poking a loose puck through during a scrum in front of the net. Bethel outshot the Jills 44-35 for the game.

The Royals next action will take place next Friday night when Bethel hosts the College of Saint Benedict at 7 p.m. in the return to MIAC play.
