Auggies complete season-opening sweep with 2-1 win

DULUTH, Minn. -- Behind goals from Gavin Holland (SO, Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) and Austin Martinsen (JR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS), the Augsburg University men's hockey team completed a season-opening nonconference sweep of the College of St. Scholastica with a 2-1 road victory on Saturday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• After surrendering a goal just 1:45 into play, Augsburg rallied back to complete the sweep with a game-tying goal in the first period and another in the second period. Holland tied the game at 1-1 with Augsburg's first power-play goal of the season, assisted by Martinsen and Patrick O'Connor (SO, Moorhead, Minn./Moorhead HS).
• Martinsen scored his second goal of the season, an unassisted marker, at the 14:33 mark of the second period.
• Making his collegiate debut in goal, Jack Robbel (FY, Bloomington, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) picked up the victory for the Auggies. After St. Scholastica scored on its second shot on-goal of the game, Robbel stopped the remaining 18 shots he faced for a 19-save win.
• Augsburg, tied as the No. 7-ranked team in the preseason USCHO.com Division III national poll, outshot St. Scholastica by a 30-20 margin in the game.
 
FOR THE FOES
• Nate Pionk scored an unassisted goal at the 1:45 mark of the first period for St. Scholastica.
• Zane Steeves had 28 saves in goal.

• Augsburg opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play next weekend with a series against Hamline. Next Friday's (11/8) game is at 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink, and next Saturday's (11/9) game is at 8 p.m. at the TRIA Rink at Treasure Island Center in St. Paul, Minn.
