Simon Hat Trick Paces Pipers Past Sabres

1/5/2018 7:25:00 PM

Box Score Like many a Minnesota car in the winter, the Hamline women's hockey team took a while to get their offense warmed up Friday against Marian University. Once they did, though, the scoring engine roared loud and clear.

Bre Simon scored three goals and Darby Dodds added two as the Pipers broke a 1-all tie with a six goal second period en route to a 9-2 win over the Sabres in their first-ever game in their home ice, TRIA rink. Madison Gaffney, Jordan Hansen, Taylor Ramthun and Zoey Lobejko also scored as HU improve to 8-2-1 overall.

The Pipers controlled the offense all the way, outshooting MU, 59-16.

But it took a while to get going. Ramthun's goal was the lone first period tally. Gaffney, Simon and Dodds scored in the first six minutes of the second period to open the game up. Later in the period, the Pipers bunched goals by Simon, Hansen and Lobejko in a three-minute span. The Sabres changed goalies twice in the session, which ended with Hamline leading by 7-2.

Dodds made it 8-2 and Simon finished off her hat trick with a power play tally to wrap up the scoring. In addition to the goalscorers, Sarah Bobrowski had four assists and Dani Perry contributed three.

Mckenna Hulslander had 14 saves in goal to earn the win.

Hamline returns to TRIA Saturday to face Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
