St. Norbert deals Cardinals 4-0 setback

Story Links

ASHWAUBENON, Wis. — For the second day in a row, the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team was involved in a game in which four goals were scored by the winning team.

Unlike Friday's 4-1 victory, however, this time around it was the Green Knights who turned up the offensive head, dealing the Cardinals a 4-0 nonconference setback Saturday afternoon at the Resch Olympic Pavilion.

The Cardinals, who got a pair of goals and an assist from Jenna Kurkowski (North Branch, Minn.), in Friday's season-opening 4-1 win, could not get their offense on track in the rematch, managing just 20 shots on goal — none of which got past SNC goalie Brynn Waisman.

The Green Knights, meanwhile, had plenty of fuel left in the tank following Friday's showdown, scoring a pair of goals both of the first two periods en route to win No. 1 on the year.

Paige Nelson opened the scoring just 3:29 into the first period and Kelsey Ross added the Green Knights' second tally of the opening frame 10 minutes late to give SNC a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of play.

Morgan Olson took control for the Green Knights in the second period, scoring back-to-back goals to give SNC an insurmountable four-goal advantage.

Ary Ziakas (Palatine, Ill.) stopped 12 of the 16 shots she faced through two periods, while Jordan Keeley (St. Peter, Minn.) stopped all four shots she faced in her 20 minutes of relief. Waisman, meanwhile, kicked out all 20 shots she faced — including eight in the third period.

The Cardinals (1-1-0 overall) are now off until Saturday, when they play host to UW-River Falls in a 2 p.m. nonconference contest at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
