MARSHFIELD, Wis. - Hockey season is officially upon us as the St. Catherine University Wildcat hockey team opened their season this past Saturday with a road victory against Finlandia University from Hancock, Mich. The Wildcats shutout the Lions scoring three goals coming from the senior class.
Head coach
Brad Marshall, in his fourteenth season at the helm, said following Saturday's win, " I am overall satisfied with how the entire team played". Marshall split time for his first-year goalies facing 19 shots in 60 minutes.
First-year
Elizabeth Kubicek (Chanhassen, Minn. / Minnetonka) started in net in her collegiate debut picking up the win playing 31:58 and facing 12 shots on goal (SOG). Midway through the second period
Karly Schmidt (Delano, Minn.) came in for Kubicek and clocked 28:02 saving 7 shots.
The Lions came out strong in the first 10 minutes of play getting eight shots off on Kubicek. St. Kate's had seven shots in the 1st period against the Lions starting goalie and their backup as they switched with 3 minutes remaining in the period.
Things picked up after the first intermission with St. Kate's getting one in at 12:50 on the board credited to senior forward
Allie Guzy (Blaine, Minn. / Spring Lake Park) from senior defenseman
MacKenzie Ess (Burnsville, Minn. / Apple Valley) and senior forward Brede Positer (Byron, Minn. / Hamline).
Just fifteen seconds later, senior forward
Laken Muller (Inver Grove Heights, Minn. / Simley) found the back of the net from her sister, junior defense

Katie Montrose (Byron, Minn. / Dodge County).
St. Kate's third goal came late in the third period from Postier assisted by senior defenseman
Tori Thompson (Rochester, Minn. / John Marshall) and first-year defenseman
Abbie Wetzel-Edstrom (West St. Paul, Minn. / Henry Sibley).
St. Catherine opens their home season on Friday, November 2 when they take on Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) foe the University of Wisconsin-Superior at 7:30 p.m.
