WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's hockey team has had a flair for the dramatic of late — and while it may be giving first-year head coach
Sarah Murray a few gray hairs, it seems to be working out just fine.
Â
For the fourth straight game, Saint Mary's was staring at an early deficit Saturday afternoon against St. Norbert — and for the fourth straight game, the Cardinals found a way to claw their way back.
Â
Just a day after spotting the Green Knights a 2-0 advantage, before rattling off four unanswered goals en route to a 4-2 victory, Saint Mary's was once again playing catch-up in the team's rematch on Saturday.
Â
Which proved to be no big deal — thanks in large part to
Kaley Manglitz (Onalaska, Wis.), who scored her first collegiate goal with 48.5 seconds remaining in overtime, lifting the Cardinals to a 2-1 win and a sweep of their two-game nonconference series at the Saint Mary's Ice Arena.
Â
Trailing 1-0 after the opening period — thanks to Hannah Hickman's goal with 38 seconds in the frame — the Cardinals netted the only goal of the second period when
Anya Hafiz (Woodbury, Minn.) banged home
Courtney Moser's (Blaine, Minn.) rebound at 16:05.
Â
Neither team could net the game-winner in the third period, setting up Manglitz's overtime heroics.
Â
Jordan Keeley (St. Peter, Minn.) finished with 29 saves in goal for the Cardinals — who have now won three straight and are 3-0-1 in their last four — while SNC goalie Evi Johnson kicked out 19 of Saint Mary's 21 shots on goal.
Â
The Cardinals (5-6-2 overall) return to conference play next weekend with a pair of games against St. Thomas. Saint Mary's travels to St. Thomas Arena in Mendota Heights, Minn., for a 7 p.m. matchup against the Tommies on Friday, with the two teams returning to the Saint Mary's Ice Arena for the 2 p.m. rematch the following afternoon. The Green Knights (2-10-0 overall) are right back in action on Tuesday, traveling to Blueline Family Ice Center in Fond du Lac, Wis., for an 8 p.m. matchup against Marian.
