Last-minute goal gives Auggies season-opening win

DULUTH, Minn. -- Mikayla Jones (SR, Oak Park Heights, Minn./B.E. Emerson Prep HS) scored the game-winning goal with 20.3 seconds left in the game, lifting the Augsburg University women's hockey team to a season-opening 2-1 nonconference victory at the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday evening.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 2, St. Scholastica 1
LOCATION: Mars Lakeview Arena, Duluth, Minn.
RECORDS: Augsburg 1-0-0 overall, St. Scholastica 1-2-0 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• In the final minute of a tied game, Jones worked the puck across the slot and deposited a backhand slot underneath the goalie's pads. Bridget Wagner (SR, Niles, Ill./Maine South HS) and Emily Ach (SR, Brooklyn Park, Minn./Park Center HS) received assists on Jones' goal.
• The Auggies tied the game at 1-1 at the 15:25 mark of the second period, as McKenna Ellena (JR, Wales, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) scored a shorthanded goal from Hollywood Hermanson (SR, Dover, Minn./Dover-Eyota HS). Ellena took a long feed from Hermanson at center ice, then eluded a Saints defender to score the goal just as a 4-on-4 situation ended and a St. Scholastica power play began.
• Augsburg held a 33-25 shots on-goal advantage in the game, including a 13-9 advantage in the second period and an 11-7 advantage in the third period.
Annie Juergens (SR, Lino Lakes, Minn./Centennial HS) stopped 24 of the 25 shots she faced in goal to pick up the victory.

FOR THE FOES
• Taylor Thompson scored from Rachel Anderson and Lauryn Hull at the 4:25 mark of the first period for St. Scholastica.
