Auggies finish sweep of Adrian

MINNEAPOLIS – The Augsburg University women's hockey team overcame seven penalties as it completed its nonconference sweep of No. 9-ranked Adrian College with a 3-2 win on Saturday afternoon at Ed Saugestad Rink.

THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Augsburg 3, Adrian 2
LOCATION: Ed Saugestad Rink, Minneapolis
RECORDS: Augsburg 6-6-1 overall (2-3-1 MIAC), Adrian 7-5-1 overall

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Despite being shorthanded three separate times while Adrian remained at full strength throughout the period, the Auggies were the stronger team in the first as they outshot the Bulldogs 10-7 and struck first with a goal by Brooke Leone (SR, Rochester, Minn./Mayo HS) with assists from Kensie Malone (SO, Minneapolis, Minn./Gentry Academy) and Elizabeth Fagerlind (FY, Kasson, Minn./Kasson-Mntorville HS).
• The second period was much busier as the Auggies took 14 shots while the Bulldogs took 13. Malone extended the Auggie lead to 2-0 with a short-handed goal just 42 seconds into the period, but the Bulldogs responded with their first goal just over thirty seconds later.
Katie Flynn (JR, Woodbury, Minn./East Ridge HS) would put the Auggies back up by two with a goal at the 10:17 mark in the second period, but the Bulldogs fought back again and cut the deficit to just one with less than a minute remaining in the second.
• The Auggies were on the ropes for much of the third period as Adrian recorded 14 shots on goal while Augsburg only managed three. Despite the lopsided shot margin, the Auggies held on to the lead for the remainder of the game, earning their third win in a row at home.
• Augsburg netminder Chloe Stockinger (SO, Sauk Rapids, Minn./Sauk Rapids-Rice HS) was outstanding once again, making 32 saves on the 34 shots she faced in the game.

FOR THE FOES
• Aileena Dopheide and Callie Wollschlager each found the back of the goal for Adrian, with Dopheide and Maya Roy earning assists.

UP NEXT
• Augsburg will return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action with a road game against Bethel University on Friday, Jan. 14 at Schwan Super Rink in Blaine, Minn.
