MINNEAPOLIS -- The collegiate head coaching debut for Augsburg University's Greg "Boom" May '07 was a successful one, as his Auggie men's hockey team claimed a 3-1, season-opening victory over No. 8-ranked St. Norbert College on Friday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Gavin Holland (SR, Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) scored the first two Auggie goals of the season. For his first goal, he sniped a shot from the top of the right faceoff circle off assists from Austin Martinsen (SR, Farmington, Minn./Farmington HS) and Mason Palmer (JR, Plymouth, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) at the 3:34 mark of the first period. Then at the 3:37 mark of the second period, Holland tipped home a shot from the right circle by Palmer, with Jarod Blackowiak (SR, Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie HS) getting the second assist.
• Augsburg took a 3-0 lead at the 8:01 mark of the third period, as Blackowiak finished off a two-man break with a shot on the left side, assisted by Holland and Nick Woodward (SR, Dubuque, Iowa/Dubuque HS).
• St. Norbert cut the lead to 3-1 with a power-play goal 32 seconds after Blackowiak's marker, but could get no further, despite outshooting Augsburg by a 12-9 margin in the third period.
• Augsburg outshot St. Norbert by a 29-28 margin in the game, with Jack Robbel (JR, Bloomington, Minn./Shattuck-St. Mary's HS) stopping 27 of the 28 shots he faced in goal to preserve the Auggie victory.
