Royals Drop Pair of Non-Conference Games

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The Bethel University men's hockey team dropped a pair of non-conference home games falling to No. 14 Marian University 6-2 Friday evening before falling to Concordia (Wis.) 9-2 Saturday afternoon.

The visiting Falcons used a five-goal second period to work past the Royals. Bethel's Michael Piehler scored at the 3:51 mark to tie things up at 1-1 in the first before CUW scored twice to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.

Following two Falcon goals in the second, Jon Skarlis cut the Royal deficit to 5-2 with assists from Kade Brannon and Jay Paul. The Falcons went on to score the next four to take the 9-2 victory.

A three-goal first period was the difference maker as Bethel fell to No. 14-ranked Marian University Friday evening. The Sabres put in the game's first goal nine minutes and half minutes in before going pu 2-0 two and a half minutes later. The Royals rattled off eight shots but were unsuccessful in finding the back of the net trailing 3-0 at the first intermission.

Marian extended their lead to 5-0 in the second including a power play just two minutes into the period. The Royals responded denying Marian of a shutout as Michael Piehler redirected one to the back of the net.

The Royals scored the first goal of the third as Nick Ketola made it 5-2 with assists from Randy Wolf and Curtis Hanson at 8:20. Four minutes later Marian strung one more together to defeat BU 6-2.

The Royals return to conference play with a home and home series with Gustavus Adolphus. Friday night's series opener at Bethel University Arena is scheduled for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
