Wildcats cruise past Lions in season opener

HOUGHTON, Mich. -- The St. Catherine hockey team returned to play on Friday after 615 days without competition. The first time back on the ice proved to be worth the wait as the Wildcats sailed past the Finlandia University Lions 4-1 on the road.

Sophomore forward Abby Pirkl had the Wildcats on the board just three minutes after the first whistle scoring her first collegiate goal with help from senior center Sophia Gorski and junior defenseman Kaitlyn Blair

Gorski doubled the Wildcats lead with an unassisted goal halfway through the second period.

Finlandia found the back of the net with under a minute to play in the second before the Wildcats added one more with just four second remaining. St. Kate's third goal of the game came from junior winger Zoe Sternberg assisted by junior forward Lindsey Hays and rookie forward Joslin Mumm

Gorksi snuck one final goal in for St. Kate's with under six minutes to play in the third with help from sophomore forward Lauren Henriksen and Pirkl.

Senior Elizabeth Kubicek played the complete game allowing one goal with 14 saves.

The Wildcats finish the road series in Michigan with a 1 pm EDT game against the Lions.
