Royals Go 1-1 on Opening Weekend

BLAINE, Minn. - The Bethel University women's hockey team opened their season with a loss on Friday night to Concordia University-Wisconsin but rebounded with an overtime victory over Chatham University on Saturday evening. The Royals hosted the CUW Falcons on Friday night and fell by a 2-0 score. Saturday saw Bethel jump out to a 2-0 lead over Chatham but had to go into overtime to get the 3-2 win.

In Friday's opener the Royals outshot the Falcons 22-17 but CUW scored single goals in the first and second period while Bethel was unable to find the back of the net all night.

On Saturday the Royals fired off 51 shots on goal to just 14 for Chatham but found themselves evened up at 2-2 after regulation. Freshman Kaylyn Forliti finished a pass from fellow freshman Payton Olson just 43 seconds into the overtime to give Bethel the victory. Kennedi Mitchell scored Bethel's first goal at 16:55 in the first period. Chatham was held without a shot on goal in the first period while Bethel had 15. The Royals were able to get a shorthanded goal to increase their lead as Olson scored her first collegiate goal with assists from Forliti and Sydnee Hanson midway through the second period. Chatham was able to get on the board with a goal at 15:59 and the Cougers were able to put nine shots on goal in the second period. Early in the third period the Royals went on a power play but Chatham was able to get a shorthanded goal to tie the game up. Despite many near scores by Bethel, the game went into overtime where the Royals wasted little time in getting the game winner.

Bethel will have a single game next weekend, on the road at UW-Eau Claire on Friday night at 7 p.m.
